ESPN’s I Scored a Goal in the FIFA World Cup Final
ESPN has done an exquisite job in interviewing 23 different players who scored a goal in the FIFA World Cup finals. There are stories that will makeĀ you laugh and others that may bring tears to your eyes. These stories are about more than just the game. They are about the time and the place when these men left their mark on the world of football.
In this episode Emmanuel Petit and his 1998 French team were down to 10 men in the closing minutes. The last player most would expect to see making a run to the goal was makeshift central defender Petit. Usually a defensive midfielder, Petit moved to the backline after another defender earned a red card earlier in the game. But when the ball fell to him in front of his own goal, Petit began an impressive run. He said he “played like a striker,” finding space through the middle. He received a perfect pass from Patrick Vieira and shot low right past the Brazilian keeper to finish a 3-0 victory over Brazil.
