IMS Weekend Update 6-6-10
NSC Stars 0-0 Rochester Rhinos
Minnesota saw the NSC Stars in action on Friday night away at the Rochester Rhinos. “Bend but don’t break” could have been Minnesota’s mantra as the game was a defensive battle for both teams, but Minnesota came away with a very important 0-0 draw and one more point.
The best chance of the match came early in the game. In the 10th minute a Rochester cornerkick was deflected to the top of the box. Tyler Rosenlund of the Rhinos pushed the ball right and took a driving shot that went through the Minnesota defense and past Joe Warren only to hit the underside of the crossbar. The ball caromed downward but off the goal line and away to allow the Stars to clear.
Minnesota was outshot 8-3 but Rochester only forced 3 saves from Joe Warren. Veteran Scott Vallow made 1 save for the Rhinos. Rochester dominated with 8 corner kicks to Minnesota’s 0.
Minnesota is now 3-7-2. Their next match is at 7 p.m. June 9 at the National Sports Center against the Montreal Impact. This will be the second meeting of the two teams. Minnesota had a 1-1 draw on the May 8th game at Saputo Stadium until a 90th minute penalty kick was awarded to Montreal, which they converted for the 2-1 win over Minnesota.

Rochester Thunder Split Pair with Chill
The Rochester Thunder PDL team split a pair of games with the Thunder Bay Chill this weekend. Thunder Bay defeated Rochester on Saturday evening by a score of 2-0.
The two teams turned right around and played a Sunday afternoon game less than 24 hours later and the home team won that decision 1-0. Both games were played at the Rochester Community Technical College.
The Thunder are now 3-2-2 with 11 points and sit in 4th place in the Heartland Division. But only 3 points separate the top 4 teams in the division. The Des Moines Menace sit in 1st place with 14 points, Colorado Foxes are in 2nd with 13 points and the St. Louis Lions are 3rd with 12 points.
The Thunder have two more home games next weekend. They will play Friday evening, June 11, at 7:00 pm against the Colorado Foxes. This time the Thunder will get an extra day’s rest and play the Springfield Demize at 3:00 pm on Sunday June 13. The Demize are in last place in the Heartland Division and have gained only 1 point in 6 games.
NPSL Twin Stars take Maximum Points
The Twin Stars took all 6 points this weekend with home games against the Madison 56ers and the Milwaukee Bavarians FC. The Twin Stars defeated the 56ers by a score of 1-0 on Saturday. Richard Kamara scored in the 25th minute when the Twin Stars were awarded a penalty kick.
On Sunday the Twin Stars faced the Milwaukee Bavarians in a game they won 4-2. Keido Pour (KP) and Geoffrey Myers each scored two goals in the match.
The Twin Stars sit top of their Midwest NPSL Division with 9 points in 4 games played.
The Minnesota Kings also played the same Milwaukee Bavarians this weekend but came out on the losing end 2-1 on Saturday at Maple Grove High School. The Kings had chances in this game but just couldn’t capitalize on their opportunities. They did pull one back in stoppage time when the Kings were awarded a penalty kick which they converted.
The Kings were defeated again on Sunday by the Madison 56ers 2-0 at Mounds View High School. The team now sits in 5th place of the 6-team Midwest Division with 3 points in four games played.

nice to see the stars get a point, but what a terrible game to watch. tough to create any chances when most of your passes are square and back without much pressure from the rhinos. hopefully things will look a little different against montreal on the 9th. would also been nice to see your leading goal scorer enter the game sooner to have a chance to make an impact on the game. GO STARS
I would be interested to know as well why Neil Hlavaty is not getting more playing time.
I finally got to watch a complete game, and study the action while it was happening. Quite frankly I am a little confused by the way the Stars played. Even more confusing was who started in the key positions. The offense looked and played with little discipline and was generally unorganized, with little creativity and without much heart. They looked content to have the ball served straight at them without challenging to keep control of the ball. M. Tarley looked totally helpless through most of the game. I don’t remember him touching the ball more than once in any possession or him having any effective passing. He never made a play on most of the balls served to him. He has scored no goals, has few shots on goal and only one assist all year. On the other hand Hlavaty has three goals (the highest scorer on the team) and doesn’t start. J. Menyoungar has not had that much better of a season. Both he and Traley have lots of experience but would better serve the team as back up players. B. Cilivilkas has played well but does not get much support in the offensive third. The midfield played better than in previous games but still has not controlled the ball that well. Takada has been a great spark in the midfield along with consistent play from D. Wasson. Wasson would be better at center midfielder has he has the most aggressive attack I have seen on the team. The defense appeared to be spread way to thin at times but held their shape very well and controlled the weak side attacks much better this game. They are getting better at staying put and not collapsing along the sides away from the ball. They defense provided most of the ball control. Clements, Wasson and Altman spent a lot of time to far forward but helped control the ball in the midfield. Clements showed much better patience and controlled his side of the field very well. He turned out several strong and fast attacks. Overall much better play that in the previous game against the Rhinos. But the Stars have much better talent than is being shown on the pitch. They are improving but the key element to their game is just not there yet.
