US Moves Into Wednesday’s Final Match With Need for Win

Here are the current standings in group C after Friday’s games:

US Soccer lists the following scenarios for the US and their chances of advancing in next Wednesday’s final games in Group C:

USA Advances:
U.S. win
U.S. tie and England loss
Tie and England-Slovenia tie, and the U.S. maintains its +2 goals scored advantage (USA 3 GF, England 1 GF)

USA Eliminated:

U.S. tie and England win
U.S loss

USA Advances and Wins Group:
Win by a greater goal difference than England wins by
Win and England win by same goal differential while the U.S. maintains its +2 goals scored advantage
Win by two or more goals and England/Slovenia tie
Win by one goal and England/Slovenia tie while scoring more goals than Slovenia

If there is a tie it will come down to “goal differential” and then “goals scored”. After that straws are drawn to determine who goes through.

Whatever the scenario, the US will be shooting for a win. Both the England v Slovenia game and the US v Algeria game will be played at the same time on Wednesday, June 23 as all 3rd round games are in the World Cup – so as not to give an advantage to any team in the group that might play differently with the knowledge of a result.
All third round games start: Tuesday, June 22 with group A and B; C and D play Wednesday, June 23; E and F play Thursday, June 24; and G and H Friday June 25.
Saturday June, 26 starts four days of “Round of 16″ single elimination games.

It would be great to see the English fail again… But, I fear it may be the US who take a digger in their game versus Algeria.

I think the US will play a totally different game against Algeria. I think we can expect that Bradly Sr. will really drive home the ‘attention’ factor in the defensive end. The forwards and mids have done pretty well in my opinion. I want to see a little more attack from Donovan and Dempsey. If Bradley Jr. brings his energy from the Slovenia game and Dempsey and Altidore the energy from the England game, we’ll be fine. In all honesty, I don’t want England to fail, but if it’s between us and them…I think we have a better chance. Of course, I’ve been wrong before, so…this time I really hope I’m not.
