US Open Cup 3rd Round Games Result in 2 Upsets

The Third Round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup saw some upsets on Tuesday night. As is always the case with domestic cup tournaments, it’s the underdog factor that makes the tournaments appealing. Such was the case last night as Major League Soccer’s New York Red Bulls were tossed from the tourney by Division-3, USL-2 Harrisburg City Islanders. Dominic Oppong scored for the Islanders in the 117th minute. That single goal was enough to move Harrisburg into the 4th round.

The other upset of the evening was another USL-2 side, the Charleston Battery, who advanced all the way to the Open Cup final in 2008. Last night the Battery took out the Chicago Fire. Charleston forced the game to extra time and then a penalty kick shootout after a 0-0 draw with the Fire. The Battery won the game 3-0 on pk’s as both Brian McBride and Wilman Conde missed their shots for Chicago and Charleston keeper Tim Melia saved a Krzysztof Krol penalty.

Two more USOC games played tonight will finalize the 3rd round. The Richmond Kickers will square off against DC United at 6:30 p.m. CT. and the future MLS Portland Timbers will host the former 2nd division and Pacific Northwest rival Seattle Sounders for the second year in a row.

It is always good to see a lower level team knock off a MLS team.
