Twin Stars Goalkeeper Alex Nyom Signs Pro Contract in Finland

Alex Nyom
26-year old Cameroon goalkeeper Jules Alex Nyom, who has played for the Twin Stars NPSL team since 2008, has signed a professional contract in Rovaniemi, Finland to play for RoPS.
RoPS played in the Finnish Premier Division (Veikkausliiga) in 2009 but was relegated to the second division (Ykkönen) after a poor season last year. RoPS plays its home games at Keskuskenttä in downtown Rovaniemi with a population of 60,000.
The team’s number one goalkeeper Mika Huuhtanen was injured last winter. Arto Vikman has been the starter this season, but the team has been without a senior backup. Because FIFA decided that the NPSL is a US Division-4 team, and because Nyom played for the Twin Stars in May and June, the governing body of soccer stated that he cannot start playing with the Finnish team until August 1. He plans on completing the season with the RoPS which ends in October.
Nyom came to Minnesota in February of 2007 after playing professionally in Cameroon where he had also played for the U-17 and U-20 youth Cameroon national teams. He also played for ES Sétif, an Algerian football club. He then played for the Twin Stars after trying out for the Minnesota Thunder and not making the team.
Nyom has made his home in the Twin Cities after meeting his future wife Robyn Hendrix in 2007 and the two were married the same year. Nyom also has family in the Twin Cities.
The 6′ 2″ Nyom made his way to Finland after hearing about the opening when a former Cameroon teammate who plays for RoPS told him about the opportunity. He arrived in Finland’s northern city of Rovaniemi in mid-June and has been training with the team since then.
RoPS brightest moments were in the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in the ’87-88 season and the UEFA Cup in the ’89-90 and ’90-91 seasons.
