Teal Bunbury Scores First League Goal for the KC Wizards

Minnesota’s Teal Bunbury scored his first league goal last night in a 1-0 win away against the Columbus Crew. The MLS rookie was said to have been excited to return to Ohio where he played for two years at the University of Akron. Bunbury gets fed a nice throughball around the 14 minute mark as he makes a run down the right side of the field and lets go a nice low rip from the top of the box and through Crew goalkeeper William Hesmer’s legs.

Bunbury could have gotten two on the night when he was sent through with a nice diagonal ball that left him one-on-one with Hesmer late in the game, but he squandered the chance. Still, the Bunbury goal stood and the Wizards held on for the team’s first road win of the year.

    1. Nice goal. Keep up the great work, sir!

    2. Parent soccer coaches. Good video to show your kids. There are some nice coaching points in the clip. BTW, you should watch it yourself. You might learn something yourself.

    3. Goal celebration. I give it a 8.9. Needs just a little bit more flair. Shame on the ref for the lecture. First goal; on the road; let him have his moment in the spotlight.

SoccerBoy, Teal is a nice kid and claims to have high Christian morals so I was pretty shocked to see him celebrate as he did and in front of Ohio fans, many who may have supported him during his time at Akron. I just didn’t get that. If you hadn’t noticed, he went right to the front of Crew supporters and did that. That is a definite No-No. You don’t do that crap and many a player have had suspensions for doing such things. The Crew supporters are known to have occasionally problems and something like that can incite fan violence. The ref had every right to nip that in the bud.

Also, shooting from that distance, you might want to not try to shoot between the keepers legs. He was lucky to get that one in. But because of the pace he made it work. I suspect he was not actually shooting at the keeper but that’s where the ball went. It was actually a keeper mistake.

I did notice it was in front of the Crew supporters. That is why I gave him a high mark–Like I said, I wanted to see a little more flair for something in the 9′s. The goal celebration is so important!

“Christian morals?” I think somewhere in the Bible it says “Rejoice in the Lord!” He was just rejoicing–that’s all–throw your hands up and dance! I am a PK (pastor’s kid) and I would have done the same thing. I think my dad would have also given me an “Atta boy!”

I guess he could have crossed it for the other guy coming down the left side. However, it did not look like that player had the speed to get there. Yeah, don’t shoot at the GK, however, he was running at pretty fast pace and the GK was not properly set–take the shot! (I would have put that ball about 20 feet over the net.) I guess you can never score if you don’t shoot, right?
