University Of Minnesota Golden Gophers Soccer Opens 2010 Training Camp; Interview with Head Coach Mikki Denney Wright

2010 August 2
by Brian Quarstad

Today’s guest is University of Minnesota women’s head soccer coach Mikki Denney Wright. The Golden Gophers open camp with meetings on Tuesday and will hold the first of their two-a-day practice sessions on Wednesday morning. This 2010 season marks Mikki’s 7th year as head coach.

Mikki took a few minutes from her busy schedule to talk to us about this season’s tough non-conference schedule. She explains what exactly goes into creating a non-conference schedule, sometimes planing as far as three years in advance.

She also talks to us about the 7 important seniors that will be leading the Gopher women on the field this season and names some of the underclassman to look for as well.

Please join me for this interview with coach Mikki Denney Wright as we talk about the 2010 Golden Gopher Soccer season.

I am actually going to make an effort to get out to a few women’s matches this year. I have heard a lot of good things about this program. Mikki was also a presenter at last year’s MYSA Coach Symposium. She did an excellent session on individual defending. Top notch stuff!

That was actually my first introduction to Mikki years ago – at a clinic. She was an excellent presenter and I was very impressed.

You will enjoy the Gophers style of play and I’m actually surprised you haven’t had your daughter our to see some games in the past. She will love it and you’ll enjoy it as well.

Shame on you Soccer Boy;-) ideal setting for a father & daughter to take in some quality soccer in a great environment. Enjoy!

I also hope to take in a few games this year. I believe this team may have the moxie to accomplish a few surprises this year and possibly move the program to the next sustainable level.

I always liked the fact the Mikki has a strong practice emphasis on defending and defensive structure.

“I always liked the fact the Mikki has a strong practice emphasis on defending and defensive structure.”

I apologize. All along I thought the ideal setting for a “father/daughter” outing was the beer garden at the Nessy–standing near the SuperRookie.

“I always liked the fact the Mikki has a strong practice emphasis on defending and defensive structure.”

Funny–that it what made me go to her session at the MYSA Symposium. She made the same point at the beginning of her session. I like to emphasize the same things with the teams I coach. I guess all great minds think alike!

Where is the best place to park? I think I read last year on this site that there were some parking issues. I also think they charge a couple of bucks for parking?

Great facility, not so great parking situation. There is room in the lot if you get there early. If not just park in the Les Bolstand overflow parking lot which is also the lot on the south east end of the golf course and used for the driving range. Or park on Coffman (see link to map) running south of Larpenteur that buts to the that parking lot. It’s about a 1 or 2 block walk. You can cut through the golf course.
