This tournament is a great opportunity to get your kids to see a higher level of soccer. I think I may take my kids out of school and bring them down to the Mall of America field at the Metrodome to see a match or two. I will take a pass on high school soccer tonight–burrrrr!
Soccer Boy – always a good time. Only bad thing is the Dome is so expansive and can make the crowd look smaller than it actually is. But there is no solution for that.
I know there are critics of the quality of HS soccer, but hardly any of them are the players. It is great to see the schools get out and support their classmates and it has to be a thrill for most of the players to get an opportunity to play in front of what probably will be the largest crowd they will ever play in front of.
Couple moments from past tourneys – An Anoka Boys team that played an outstanding complete soccer game in every sense of the concept to win the state tourney against AV ( I think with out verifying)
A championship girls game that started with an underclassman Woodbury backup keeper having to start the game due the regular keeper injuring herself in warm-ups or the previous game.
First long effort placed on goal in the early moments bounced up and over her head for a goal. One of the best acts of leadership and compassion then followed.
The captain of the Woodbury team came up to the distraught keeper, put both arms over the top over her shoulders, was nose to nose with her, spoke with her for about 20 seconds, wiped away a tear, patted her on the head, gave her a hug, and went back for the restart. The goalie played well for the rest of the game and I believe Woodbury came back and won. Can’t remember the opponent or score……just that act of leadership
Predictions:
Prairie Seeds Academy (should be AA like the rest of the private schools) will win every game by at least two goals and win the Class A boys crown.
MPLS Southwest makes a big run and nips AV 2-1 in the final of Class AA.
“(should be AA like the rest of the private schools)”
You mean like De LaSalle, Minnehaha Academy, St. Thomas Academy SPA, Totino Grace, ….? Wait, ……they are all Class A schools. So you’re saying all private schools should be AA? That hardly seems fair. I understand the dilemma but I don’t think an overall blanket ruling is a fair answer either.
You hit the nail on the head BQ. It should be the same way in hockey as well… Benilde SM, Holy Angels, Rochester Lourdes, etc… Blanket all private schools into AA.
@ Michigan Mike – I think Holy Angels plays in AA in hockey. BSM did too if I recall properly.
I believe that Class A schools have the option of playing in class AA if they wish, but you can’t force a school with lower enrollments to play up. That being said, teams that know they would dominate at the Class A option should opt to play up in the interest of fair play. That is exactly why Holy Angels choose to play AA hockey. You can’t blame Prairie Seeds Academy for playing in Class A as it is a small school and the program is only 2 years old. If they dominate for years to come, then they could consider AA if that is in fact an option at all.
The core city schools in MSP and STP have charter school, special ed schools and other educational organizations added to their enrollment count. I don’t know what the exact numbers are, but I’m guessing a number of the core city AA schools would actually be A. Also, with shrinking enrollment in all the city schools, it wont be long before they are all A. I watched the Stillwater v Central game at the beginning of the year. I don’t know if either team has a player that could make a MIAC team. Also saw South v Apple Valley game this year. Neither team looked very good…AV did looked fast compare to South’s slow, build up style of play. South was also very badly organized. I’m not sure what has happened to boys HS soccer over the last 2 or 3 years, but it has become even more difficult to watch.
Funny MIAC Fan, I was sitting in the press booth covering the Class AA games tonight when I read you comment. In fact I was sitting next to a MIAC coach and we both had to chuckle a little at your comment about Stillwater and Central. First, you watched an early season game and you should know that more high school soccer is never great but it’s really not great early in the season. #2) Both Central and Stillwater have a number of players who are highly being sought after by top MIAC programs.
Apple Valley’s Obarski is being sought after by quite a number of D3 schools. I’m actually pretty shocked he’s not a D1 prospect. He scored 4 goals tonight and some of them were nothing short of outstanding.
any good players from class A teams?
how about the private schools Totino grace Benilde St thomas Academy
Isn’t last years Mr. Soccer from AV stand on the sidelines for the U of M club team?
Everyone knows that Mr. Soccer is a joke. It is not even an award based on high school accolades. Jabari was no where near the best player last year, not even on his own team! This year Miller was not the best player in high school soccer as evidence of his inability to lead his team to the state tournament. Obarski has single handedly lead his team through the playoffs with 12 goals and 6 assists in 4 playoff games. Miller is a great player and probably is a little better than Obarski, although they play very different positions, but if you are the best player in the state you should be able to take a game over when it really matters. Miller has failed to do that two years in a row considering last years state semi-final game where Woodury was a far better team than Wayzata, but lost the game. Obarski has, for two years in a row (6 goals in state tournament, 2 in championship last season), stepped up when it has really mattered. Again this is not a knock on Miller, he is a great player and will do very well in college and hopefully beyond, but not the best player during the high school season.
I don’t think so. Bijan Jibari plays on the U of M club team and is attending the U so it’s possible. But I’ve never seen him there.
That is my point. Previous years Mr. Soccer played D1 or had the chance to. Not all lasted or have done extremely well, but the caliber is different, because the quality over all is way down. I don’t know if I agree with Get Real. Sure you can always argue 1 v 2 v 3, but generally, the award goes to one of the top 2 or 3 players. I will say that I think Eric Miller is a very good player. But he will probably struggle at Creighton.
Hey, he’s a lot tougher the Gotsmonov and he did well there!?!?
