St. Cloud State University – Boys Class A

Mankato East 2-1 Orono
The first game of the evening in the boys Class A quarterfinals was a tightly contested battle between #3 seeded Mankato East (17-0-2) and Orono H.S. (15-4-2).

It was the second half before either team scored. Orono got on the board first with a goal by Willi Semsch in the 43rd minute off a Nick Manzoni corner kick.

With only 10 minutes left in regulation Mankato East drew the game even. Brandon Welter fed Mohamud Ahmed. The junior midfielder launched a 35-yard shot that found the net.

Two overtimes were not enough to decide the game, even after Mankato East outshot Orono 25-15 after full time and 2 overtimes.

Penalty kicks decided this contest with Mankato East winning with all 5 spot kicks to Orono’s 4.

Saint Cloud Cathedral 1-0 Mounds Park Academy
The second game of the night saw #2 seed Mounds Park Academy (16-1-0) play unseeded Saint Cloud Cathedral (17-4-1) to a 0-0 draw at the end of regulation. The game went into overtime with the golden goal rule and it took Saint Cloud Cathedral only 1 minute of extra time to earn themselves a ticket to the state semifinals.

Nick Schmit scored a header from a Mike Schuweiler corner kick to win the game.  Cathedral held a 15-6 shot advantage after the 82 minutes of play.

Hopkins High School – Girls Class A

Rogers 4-0 La Crescent
Rogers’ Gabby Moter scored early for the Rogers Royals (21-0-0) at Hopkins High School in the Girls Class A quarterfinals. Little did she know her goal in the 13th minute would be the game winner for her team. Amber Paul scored two goals in the 23rd and 79th minute and Aliha Ballon also got into the action, scoring on an assist by Paul with a give-and-go in the 46th minute.

The Royals head to the Metrodome for the semifinals on a 22-game win streak.

Chisago Lakes 1-0 Benilde-St. Margaret’s
Number 1 seeded Benilde-St. Margaret’s (19-0-1) were upended by unseeded Chisago Lakes (15-5-1) on Thursday evening’s late game. Ashlee Ricci was the hero for the Wildcats scoring in the 53rd minute. She found the net by going high under the crossbar on the right side and was assisted by Cassandra Trandahl. The Ricci goal was one of only 5 shots at the Red Knights goal while Benilde-St. Margaret’s peppered the Chisago goal with 20.
