U.S. Soccer WNT World Cup Hopes Still Alive with 3-0 Win Over Costa Rica
The U.S. Women’s National Team defeated Costa Rica 3-0 on Monday evening in the 2010 CONCACAF Women’s World Cup Qualifying tournament third place game. After a semifinal loss to Mexico on Friday evening, the victory in Cancun, Mexico was crucial for the U.S. and was the team’s only lifeline to still make the 2011 Women’s World Cup. By winning, the U.S. assures itself a home and away playoff game with Italy. The winner of that series will book themselves a trip to the 2011 Women’s World Cup in Germany.
Lauren Cheney and Abby Wambach scored in the 1st half with Wambach getting on the board again in the second half. The Americans out shot Costa Rica 14 to 8 but dominated shots on goal 9 to 2 forcing the Ticos to make 6 saves.
The U.S. team will return to the United States for several days of rest before leaving for Italy on Nov. 14. The USA’s roster for both legs will be announced shortly. The matches against Italy will mark the first time the U.S. women have participated in a playoff to qualify for a FIFA Women’s World Cup, having advanced directly from the CONCACAF qualifying tournament in each previous attempt.
The 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup will take place from June 26-July 17 in nine venues across Germany: Berlin, Frankfurt, Mönchengladbach, Sinsheim, Wolfsburg, Augsburg, Bochum, Dresden and Leverkusen.
