Successful First Weekend For MTA U17/18 Development Academy Team
After only five training sessions squeezed in after the end of the high school season, the Minnesota Thunder Academy U17/18 Development Academy Team traveled to Chicago over the November 13-14 weekend to play its first games since MTA’s recent acceptance into the U.S. Soccer Development Academy. MTA outplayed Chicago Magic on Saturday 3-0, with goals by Gerald Ben, Eric Miller and Tom Obarski, and played to a 1-1 draw on Sunday against Chicago Fire, behind a goal by Nick Forsgren. Both the Magic and Fire have been Development Academy clubs since the inaugural 2007 season, and few were willing to predict such a successful weekend for MTA’s first games against these traditional Midwestern powerhouse clubs.
The MTA U17/18 team is stocked with players from the various Minnesota high-school all-state teams. Of the eleven players named last week in the Pioneer Press All-State Soccer Team (which lists players from both AA and A classes), eight play for the MTA U17/18s. More information regarding the MTA team, including its roster, can be found here.
The MTA U-15/16 team defeated the Chicago Magic on Saturday with a 2-0 win. Sunday’s results versus the Chicago Fire were not listed when this story was posted.
MTA was accepted into the U.S. Soccer Development Academy together with Shattuck-St. Mary’s, and SSM made the same trip to Chicago this weekend. Shattuck was defeated 2-1 by Chicago Fire on Saturday, and drew the Chicago Magic 2-2 on Sunday. More information regarding the Shattuck-St. Mary’s team, including its roster, can be found at here.
The Shattuck-St. Mary’s U15/16 team was also defeated by the Chicago Fire on Saturday by a score of 1-0 and Sunday’s results against the Chicago Magic were not listed when this story was posted.
Both MTA and Shattuck-St. Mary’s play their first home games next weekend at Macalester College. Check the teams’ USSF Development Academy website for days and exact times.
