USA 1-0 Italy Women’s National Team Highlights

2010 November 23
by Brian Quarstad

The U.S. Women’s National Team defeated Italy 1-0 last Saturday, November 20, in Padova, Italy.

The winning goal game in dramatic fashion in the 4th minute of stoppage time. 21-year-old U.S. forward Alex Morgan scored the game winner after being inserted into the lineup in the 86th minute. The U.S. were in need of inspiration after outshooting the Azure 19 to 6 with 11 of those shots on net. Italy’s Ana Maria Picarelli was outstanding in net and kept her team in the contest until a long ball forward was flicked on by Abby Wambach. Morgan received the header but still had some work to do as she touched well past her defender,  cut an angle and hit the ball low and hard to the far post, finally beating Picarelli.

The US will now play Italy next Saturday, Nov. 27th at 1:00 p.m. at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill. in this special home and away playoff series to earn a spot in the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup which will be held in Germany. The game will also be carried on ESPN3.com.

This really shows how bad american soccer is. US used to dominated the world, but now they can’t even beat mexico. It’s not a suprise to me, if you go to youth tournaments, it’s so obvious that it’s going to happen soon or later. American kids (boys and girls) have no soccer skills, even though, I admire their fighting spirit. Having heart is not enough to play at high level. All american kids all fast and strong but with no skills. Please tell MYSA to work with the adult league to bring more people familiar with soccer to teach the kids instead of whole bunches of parents volunteers.

MYSA…what is that? State Associations have not influenced quality soccer for years. Thanks to the clubs who have stepped away and turned out some really good players!!! Inspite of W’s and L’s.
