Cobi Jones has left the Los Angeles Galaxy after 15 years and 300 matches played for the club. He retired in 2007 and came back with the Galaxy the following year as an assistant coach in 2008 and ’09.

Jones will now be the new associate director of soccer and club ambassador with the Cosmos who seem to be on the fast track for becoming the 20th team in Major League Soccer. Commissioner Don Garber has talked highly of the group.

As an ESPN article pointed out this evening,  Jones, who is now 40 years old, born in 1970, is old enough to remember the North American Soccer League and the original Cosmos.

“They want to do amazing things, not just in the New York area, but for MLS and soccer in the United States and internationally,” Jones told ESPN in an interview on Monday evening. “I can’t go into too many of the details but it’s something that will pleasantly surprise a lot of people. The ultimate goal is to get into MLS, but the way they’re going about it, I think, is the right way.”

“The New York Cosmos have a history of associating ourselves with the best,” said Paul Kemsley, Chairman of the New York Cosmos, in a statement. “Cobi Jones fits perfectly into the DNA of this club. We look forward to the impact that he will have on this organization and on the players who will form the backbone of our future.”

I was waiting to hear some more definite steps taken by NY Cosmos. I think we can be quite sure that the next MLS expansion step will be precisely that. And rightly so. The NY metro should be able to support another team just like LA does. In addition this teams brings to the forefront a fabulous piece of American soccer history.
