2011 February 5

Steve Bellis

Steve Bellis, a name familiar to many soccer households in Minnesota, has been named Head Coach for the Division II women’s soccer team at Concordia University in St. Paul, MN.

The Manchester, England native has served as Director of Coaching and Player Development for Wings Soccer Club (1998-2007) and spent two seasons as Academy of Holy Angels Head Girls Soccer Coach. During that time he also worked at Macalester College as an assistant coach and also served as their JV coach. He also worked as the Technical Director for the Minnesota Thunder Academy after their merger with Wings. He’s been a Minnesota Youth Soccer Association (MYSA) Olympic Development Staff Soccer Coach since 2000 and is a Staff Soccer Coach for Coerver Coaching, also since 2000.

Most recently he was women’s head coach at St. Catherine University. While there, Bellis went 28-50-9 overall and 9-40-6 in MIAC play during his five seasons at St. Kate’s.

“I’m very excited to announce that Steve has accepted the position with our athletic department,” said Concordia University athletic director Tom Rubbelke. “We are very fortunate to land a coach with his experience, enthusiasm and background in the sport of soccer. I know he’s eager to get started and we are all looking forward to his service to Concordia.”

The Concordia University Golden Bears are an NCAA Division II women’s soccer program competing in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). Concordia is the only private Division II institution in the state of Minnesota and the only Division II athletic program in the Twin Cities metro area.

What happened to the previous coach? It looked like he had some decent success (relative to the school’s history). If you look at the roster, Steve should inherit a decent nucleus that will be returning.

Bellis will actually be coaching at Concordia UNIVERSITY, St. Paul where he will enjoy the new SeaFoam Stadium completed in 2009 that can be used year-round!

The previous coach, Joe Alianiello, resigned, according to Concordia University’s site.

Good Choice – didn’t know Joe, I think Bellis will do a better job of recruiting and has made the competition amongst NSIC schools for state talent tougher

We’ll see. 9-40-6 in the MIAC suggests otherwise.

Concordia is four times running national womens Volleyball Champions in NCAA II. If the University gives coach and program similar resources, it could be great for CU Soccer and NCAA II statewide for womens soccer, Having a DII option in metro is a good thing, even if at private tuition compared to the six state universities and U of M sites at Duluth and Crookston who compete in NSIC / NCAA II. Overall, athletics at CU has evolved great in about a 12 year DII history. Joe is a good man who did well with what he had. Good luck to coach Bellis.

Cam – Are you saying soccer is not funded the same as VB and other sports there? What is the deal with that? I have a relation on Duluth’s team. CU looked decent when they played them and played some good soccer.

Eric – He was at a difficult school in the MIAC to recruit the players to. You can’t judge Bellis on his record at St. Cate’s

3-5 years ago I know, as a duluth player’s parent we looked forward to playing CU because it was certainty to earn conference points that day; however recently I would agree they had been more competitive the last two years
