Head coach John Spencer encourages his players

The Portland Timbers were training again on Sunday after two days of rain in Casa Grande, Arizona. The temperatures were cool, in the lower 50′s, but the blue sky and green grass were a welcome sight as head coach John Spencer kept things light in warm ups. Intensity increased as the training session progressed with Spencer cajoling his players to do better on their crosses and finishing.

Kenny Cooper had a presence on the field not only with his size but with his confidence by squeezing many finishes into smallest corners of the net.

Troy Perkins also seemed to be up to the task making many a fine save on players like Ryan Pore and Eddie Johnson.

How many MLS teams have spring training of this sort?

Most have somewhere they go for a while. So far there have been 8 MLS teams at the resort but before the season starts 16 of the 18 teams will have at least played a game there. I’m going to do a story on the facility. It’s really a fantastic place for MLS or US National youth teams to come and train.
