Talking with Portland Timbers Assistant Coach Amos Magee
Amos Magee watches a training session intently as new Timbers forward Kenny Cooper takes a breather.
The Portland Timbers were training last week in Casa Granda, Arizona where I took in several training sessions and a game between Portland and the Montreal Impact.
I had the chance to sit down with Portland Timbers assistant coach Amos Magee. The Timbers are about to embark on their first season as a Major League Soccer Team. Magee talks about his relationship with Portland Technical Director Gavin Wilkinson and new head coach John Spencer as the team approaches their first MLS season.
Magee, who spent many years with the Minnesota Thunder as a player, also spent time with several MLS teams. He finished his time with the Thunder as a head coach before becoming the Director of Soccer Development with the Timbers. Magee, who has been with the Timbers for 2 years, explains his new role where he will be in charge of the reserve team. We also talk about how the reserve teams for MLS will change slightly this season as they are brought back due to popular demand by coaching staffs. We also talk about what the future may hold for those reserve teams.
Magee also speaks about the team’s time at Casa Grande and the Grande Sports Complex and what the Timbers goal has been in spending considerable time training in Arizona.
Lastly, Magee talks about his new marriage and life as a soccer coach on the road.

Always liked Amos.
You know people in Portland, they don’t get tan out in the sun they just show more rust.
