Juan Agudelo – Is He The Real Thing?

by Brian Quarstad

DC United hosted the Red Bulls Thursday evening. The result?  Red Bulls 4-0 DC United.

Thierry Henry seems to have his mojo back, scoring in the 11th and 37th minutes, and Joel Lindpere scored a brilliant goal against a rather uninspired United defense. But the goal of the night was undoubtedly scored by 18-year-old Juan Agudelo.┬áThe young Red Bull striker came on in the 70th minute for Luke Rogers and nearly headed a ball into the goal within several minutes of his entry into the game. While it is true that DC United’s defensive line may have been feeling the effects of getting shelled 3-1, there is no doubt that only a player with great potential and skill can pull off what Agudelo did in the 90th minute. (Watch the video below)

While expectations have been high for other U.S. players that never lived up to their billing, it’s hard to debate that this young man has the potential to be one of the best pure finishers the U.S. has ever produced.

Some are comparing it to this great Henry goal. (Watch it here)

While Agudelo’s goal may not be quite as spectacular, the young man is only 18 and you have to believe great things are in store for him. It can’t hurt that he is now training along side one of the best world class goal scorers of of the last 15 years, Henry.

If they Red Bulls keep playing the way they did last night, they will easily be MLS champs. Henry was amazing to watch and I just about wet myself when Agudelo scored. (BQ, thanks for pulling the Henry clip from Arsenal.)

I thought Davies deserved a mention. While I still think he needs to grow up, I saw a lot of effort on the pitch. He was clearly on-side in the first-half after receiving a nice ball played into space and it could have been a game changer as I think the score was still 0-0 at the time. I do think he was missing support from his teammates and thought he was non-existent in the second half.

    Class goal.

Definitely a player worth keeping an eye on.

It is going to help him that New York does not need him to start every match; he can develop at a reasonable speed. One does not have to watch for long to see that he has something that most players his age do not have.
