North American Soccer League Podcast Episode #4

2011 April 27
by Brian Quarstad

Welcome to week #4 of the IMSoccer News North American Soccer League Podcast. Once again this week I’m joined by Gerry Wittmann and Jay (YankiBoy) Long as co-hosts.

Our special featured guest this week is NASL Public Relations Director, Kartik Krishnaiyer. The IMS Podcast team ask Krishnaiyer questions concerning the NASL’s future plans on live streaming, future plans for Player of the Month and year-end NASL honors. He explains the changes that have happened since David Downs has rolled his sleeves up and started work as commissioner of the league. Krishnaiyer even speaks about the biggest challenges he’s faced after being on the job for over a year.

Once again we travel around the league, getting first hand game reports from correspondents who took in NASL games.

This week Phil Germain checks in for us from Montreal. Germain has been the French speaking play-by-play announcer for the Impact for Radio Canada for 14 years. Germain has some very interesting insights into the coaching situation for the Impact.

We also check in again with Chris Martz from Atlanta, Georgia.

Gerry, Jay and I review this week’s news in the NASL and finish up with predictions for this coming week’s slate of games.

Please join us for this fourth episode of the IMSoccer News North American Soccer League Podcast.

Another entertaining show guys. I continue to be impressed by the quality of guests you are getting to appear BQ, keep it up! And yankiboy, I am all set for the Strikers/Islanders showdown on Friday! I think the Strikers will finally put together their best overall game and adding in the short turnaround for the home side, the Strikers are going to pull this one out in dramatic fashion again, 3 – 2.

    RE: Carolina’s Attendance

-I believe the two games that they have hosted were in the middle of two torrential downpours, including a deadly tornado that struck only 30miles to the west. I don’t think the first two games are a bellweather.

-Gerry is right in his hesitation to be overly critical at this point.

Great question to Kartik Krishnaiyer about webcasting. I have been disappointed with some webcasts, however, it is great to hear they recognize this as a problem and are working to make changes. I was also excited to hear they will be archiving matches, and working on color commentary issues. (That guy down in PR was hilariously terrible!) It was also great to hear about the possibility of MLS and foreign friendlies. I would love to see Brighton & Hove Albion come to the US and play the Stars.

In understand that the NASL is concentrating on the short term, however, I would have liked to hear more about their visions for the future. However, I am certain that we will hear more in the weeks to come.

Great job BQ. You are a pioneer in the promotion of D2 soccer in the US, and you are doing more than your fair share in helping novice fans like me learn more about the rich tradition of D2 soccer. Keep up the great work!

@Soccer Boy: Personally, I wouldn’t call the PR commentator “terrible”.

I will say that, like some of the previous Islanders color commentators, he has a very unorthodox style (and “no”-I don’t know him and have never met him as far as I know of–so my assesment doesn’t involve any sort of personal relationship bias).

I was pleased with the quality of the stream and I was nothingless than THRILLED over the fact that there were replays available.

Those are HUGE steps in the right direction.
