Adjustments made to divisional alignment

USL announced the revised schedule for USL PRO today, with Antigua Barracuda FC joining the American Division and the Los Angeles Blues joining the National Division as part of the adjusted divisional alignment resulting in two six-team divisions.  The change was made necessary by the removal of three Puerto Rico Soccer League teams from the 2011 schedule earlier this week.

The revised schedule for the remainder of the 2011 season is available on www.uslsoccer.com. Each USL PRO team will continue to play 24 regular season games, and all games involving PRSL teams will continue to count towards the league standings.  The schedule was revised for the 12 USL PRO teams with existing home dates and travel considerations as the primary factors.

USL also announced minor alterations to the USL PRO Game of the Week schedule on FOX Soccer.  The Friday, June 24 game will now feature the Charleston Battery at the Wilmington Hammerheads (8 p.m. ET), while Antigua Barracuda FC will travel to FC New York on Friday, July 1 (8 p.m. ET), the Los Angeles Blues will play host to the Dayton Dutch Lions on Friday, July 15 (11 p.m. ET), and Los Angeles will be featured at Wilmington on Friday, August 5 (7 p.m. ET).

The 2011 USL PRO playoffs will continue as planned with eight teams advancing following the conclusion of the regular season. The top four teams each from the American Division and National Division will advance to four single-game Division Semifinals taking place Friday-Sunday, August 19-21.  The single-game Division Finals will be played a week later, with the 2011 USL PRO Championship, hosted by the highest remaining seed, to be played Saturday, September 3.  One Division Semifinal, a Division Final and the USL PRO championship game will be televised nationally on FOX Soccer.

Well, in spite of the loss of three teams, if you go to the USL website, all this looks pretty balanced, all things considered.

Bart, I just wonder what the USL PRO schedule is going to look like once a few teams get a clue and go to NASL, and the remaining clubs fold.

@ Soccer Boy – I think the real question will be what will NASL look like once a few of the teams bleed cash like a stuck pig without Traffic financial help, and then they go to USL Pro while the remaining NASL teams fold once Traffic buggers out.

I wonder if either organization has the right formula to succeed. Both have their warts. Since this article is about the USL Pro’s new schedule, I’ll keep my comments to the USL…

It seems they have made the best possible fix to a very bad public relations mess. In addition to a public relations mess, I wonder how much of a mess this has caused with the USL’s primary customers – the club owners? Based on the schedule, it seems Charleston flexed their muscles as they don’t travel to LA, so no increased costs for them. OCSC seems to have some money behind them so they get two games in the same weekend at Antiqua at what has to be one of the best named stadiums in soccer…Sticky Wicket Stadium. Just love that name! It’s a geat descriptor for what the Puerto Rico situation caused for the USL Pro.

what’s sad is Rochester should have been playing in MLS by now, but buffoon local owners led us down a path where we’re now playing “Antigua” in a league that actually had teams drawing 128 fans and folding mid-season. pathetic. and they’re trying to sell this junk to fans who know better.

The problem in Rochester is with the fans, not the local owner. To have a new stadium built less than 1/2 mile away from the old one, and to lose fan support over the past years because that new stadium is now in a “bad area” is simply unacceptable.
