Teitur Thordarson Out as Head Coach of Vancouver Whitecaps; Tom Soehn to Take Over for Remainder of Season
The Vancouver Whitecaps announced Monday afternoon that Teitur Thordarson has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the organization.
According to a source, the team held a meeting with all its players this morning where Director of Soccer Operations Tom Soehn gave players the news. He told them that Thordarson and goalkeeper coach Mike Salmon have left.
Soehn also told the players that he would be fulfilling the head coaching duties with the club through the end of the 2011 season.
Just moments ago the club released a statement saying: “Teitur and Mike have served the club extremely well in recent seasons but we feel that today’s changes are necessary in order to accelerate the process of turning around our difficult start to the season,” said Paul Barber, Whitecaps FC chief executive officer. “We wish Teitur and Mike well for the future.”
The Whitecaps won their season opener on March 19 against Toronto FC at Empire field. Since then Vancouver have not won a game and they currently sit at the bottom of the Western Conference with a 1-5-6 record.

What a shame. Vancouver has been wonderful to watch all season. Yes, they have struggled in the W column but they played a nice brand of soccer. I have enjoyed the every game that I have seen on tv. The coaching was evident on the field, the lads are well trained, created good scoring opportunities, were exciting to watch but were unlucky with injuries and red cards. Of course I don’t know what goes on in the dressing room or back office but from my perspective–coaching isn’t the problem. I hope we don’t see an Italian situation of revolving door coaches in Vancouver. Teitur, I wish you well.
Ugh…this is so disappointing…
Soehn picked all his players including their DP that nobody knows! He was fired while in DC and will be very surprised if he last at Vancouver.
Serously?!?! Who couln’d see this coming?!?!!? When Soehn got that gig (which I still don’t fully comprehend–unless it was for exactly this sort of situation), and Thordarson was working with a no-confidence contract–the writing was on the wall.
He was absolutely DREADFUL when he was in charge here, in DC. It was embarrassing.
I will never forget him throwing Janicki and some others under the bus. With an established player, a big star–ok–maybe you have to do that to motivate them sometime. But with a guy that you brought in from the third division? A guy who you are developing?
Maybe he has learned something since the DC debacle.
Good luck with that, Vancouver…
Congrats Tommy Soehn! He is a great guy and I’m sure will do great things with that team.
Playing the 3-5-2, right?
Tom Soehn might be a great guy but I have yet to see anything that has convinced me that he is a great coach.
Maybe he has progressed. I wish him the best of luck.
