North American Soccer League Podcast Episode #8

2011 June 2
by Brian Quarstad

Welcome to week #8 of the IMSoccer News North American Soccer League Podcast. Once again this week I’m joined by co-hosts Gerry Wittmann and Jay (YankiBoy) Long.

We take a slightly different tack on things this week as Jay, Gerry and I review this past week’s games and give our predictions for this coming weekend’s games.

I also have a brief post-game interview with rookie goalkeeper Jeff Attinella who has been doing an outstanding job for FC Tampa Bay as of late. Attinella had to fill the shoes of Daryl Sattler after he went down early in the season with a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the year.

FC Tampa Bay head coach Ricky Hill talks to IMS after their 0-0 draw with the NSC Minnesota Stars at the NSC Stadium in Blaine, MN. Hill was upbeat after their draw with Minnesota and talks about his team, Jeff Attinella and the departure of Tony McManus.

Manny Lagos, head coach of the NSC Minnesota Stars, also checks in with post-game comments.

Then the IMSoccer News NASL Podcast team reviews some of this week’s news across the league including the strange release of Tony McManus and the Islanders’ success in the CFU, meaning once again they will be appearing in the CONCACAF Champions League.

Please join us for this 8th episode of the IMSoccer News North American Soccer League Podcast.

It appears Etienne Barbara is now wanted by several MLS teams. Who else from NASL do you think is on the MLS radar? Brad Rusin? Simone Bracalello? Jonathan Fana?

MH- you have to figure that a few of these goalies have to be on the radar. I can’t imagine many clubs overlooking what Brad Knighton and Jeff Antinella are doing right now.

Bracalello and Fana are also up near the top with Barbara. All three are class players in this league.

    MH,

Sorry buddy but it drives me nuts when people make generalized statements with no proof or links. However, I would love to read something that actually quotes someone saying there is truly interest.

I talked to Etienne at length last night and he is not aware of any interest at this time. That doesn’t mean that he isn’t interested because he surely is.

Another issue is MLS rules and if a team could actually make him eligible. It’s not as simple as the NASL.

Lastly, Jay Long arranged an interview with Etienne which we conducted last night. Watch for it as either a stand alone podcast or as part of next weeks NASL Podcast.

I find it interesting how it has really taken Bracalello a year in the league to sort of adjust and get his confidence. I stated this in a comment the other day but it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see him with a hat trick this year and I would think he’s due for a brace here soon.

I hope You guys are right about the game this coming Saturday between FC Edmonton and Montreal Impact. That game will be broadcast on Canadian national television on the Radio Canada (the French CBC). That is pretty exciting for me at least.

Well, Daniel – your guys sure beat up on FC Tampa Bay. At least you’re scoring goals. You can’t say the same for Montreal right now. Take away that 5-goal game against Edmonton and the Impact really haven’t scored many goals this year.

Luckily the Montreal v Edmonton game is at Saputo, because that field in Edmonton makes watching all but impossible. What a disaster that place is.

@BQ, Gerry, Jay – Another great listen as always gentlemen. Lots of great topics this week. Excellent point by Jat regarding the shame of not being able to see what a really hot D2 team like the Railhawks are right now, could do in USOC play. Last year when the Islanders heated up they had an incredible performance against the Galaxy in Champions League. I guess we’ll just have to hope for next year when it comes to USOC.

Last week I told you guys that I had a feeling the Silverbacks would give the Railhawks a tough fight, and it proved true. This week I have two surprising picks for you, and let’s see if I’m on the money again.

First, I think Montreal’s players are going to come out at home this week with a chip on their shoulder and some pride. They’ve been playing some terrible soccer when there are MLS eyes upon them. Something just tells me that the players are going to come out with some attitude this week, and they’re going to play a solid game and win 2 – 1.

Finally, I’ll close with my Strikers. Yesterday the Strikers used split squads to play a couple of friendlies, one against Panama, and one against Guadeloupe. The game against Panama finished in a 1 – 1 draw, and they defeated Guadeloupe 1 – 0. The D has gelled, and Glaeser (not mentioned by anyone in your GK discussion!) has been very good. The Islanders have been playing a lot of games recently and are travelling on another short turn around. Gerry is absolutely right about Abe Thompson, he’s the key to reviving this attack, and I think there’s a good chance he starts Saturday night. So let the barrage of remarks begin, because here’s my prediction:

    Strikers – 3 Islanders – 0

@BQ, Sorry to drive you nuts with the generalized statement, but they can be useful to elicit more specific answers to a situation that’s still developing, as you so well demonstrated. As always, keep up the great work.

@MH: Sorry that I didn’t respon until now. As far as Faña goes, I haven’t heard anything about MLS interest since he scored for W-Connection against Red Bulls in Champions League play. There are some questions about how accurate that report was because, if I recall correctly, it was never verified or denied by Red Bull.

I will ask him the next time that I see him (that should be next weekend).

Thank you very much for your enthusiasm, the kind words and your participation.

    Brian:

Is it possible to make these podcast episodes available in Google Listen? It cannot find the audio file for some reason.

  13. June 3, 2011

    Olgun,

Unfortunately, I don’t have the technical knowledge to even set up an RSS for the podcast so I can’t even get it on iTunes. I looked up Google Listen and it looks as if it’s a method to make the audio available on an Android. Again, sorry. I just don’t have the expertise to do that and no one has stepped forward that can do this for me.
