Fort Lauderdale 3-0 Minnesota; Star’s Worst Loss of the Season

2011 June 12

The NSC Minnesota Stars had a chance to put some distance between themselves and FC Edmonton for second place in the North American Soccer League on Saturday night, but a second half explosion from the Fort Lauderdale Strikers cost the Stars dearly in South Florida.

Substitute Brian Shriver scored two goals for the Strikers after Yoximar Granado had opened the scoring early in the second half. With the loss, the Stars’ record is now 4-3-5 with 17 points. The Strikers jumped into fourth place with a 3-2-5 record and 14 points.

The Stars return to action next Saturday at NSC Stadium in Blaine, Minn., against FC Edmonton.

This match was a pleasant surprise for us Striker Likers. Was not expecting a 3-0 finish, especially against Minnesota. Looks like the return of Abe Thompson did indeed spark the offense, 3 goals(and many more chances) in both of the games since he’s returned as a starter. We had yet to score more than 2 in any game before he came back. There is a confidence with the offense now that is refreshing to see.

The clean sheet was not as unprecedented, 2 of the previous 3 matches ended 0-0, Glaeser in goal has been fabulous and the back line led by Hohlbein has held up pretty well all year. Only Carolina has been able to score more than twice on the Strikers defense.

Watch out NASL, Strikers are getting it together! Unbeaten in 4 with 3 clean sheets and now riding a 2 game win streak. DEFEND THE FORT!!

Hopefully the Stars will continue to have success, even if they don’t have the Atlanta Silverbacks to kick around anymore.
