RailHawks Head Coach Rennie Proud of Streak but More Proud of Players
The NSC Minnesota Stars may have put a temporary damper on things for the Carolina RailHawks Saturday evening with a 1-0 victory over the streaking team who had gone 13 games without a loss and were sitting on 10 straight wins. But with the streak behind them, Carolina’s head coach Martin Rennie was still able to conjure up a slight smile after the game as he spoke about his team and its record, not only on the field but off the field by moving players along to Europe and MLS.
On Friday the Carolina RailHawks announced they had transferred team captain and stalwart defender Brad Rusin to HB Køge of the Danish Superliga (Denmark’s top league), pending the finalization of his player registration and international transfer clearance. They also announced that backup goalkeeper Caleb Patterson transferred to Atlético Clube de Portugal, which plays in Portugal’s second division.
While some may blame the RailHawks’ second defeat of the year on the loss of Rusin, the defense never looked disorganized until the dying minutes of the game when they were down a man from a late red card which caused Carolina to play with short handed. The ability to move players on to the next level and not skip a beat is a tribute to head coach Rennie, who is very proud of his record of advancing players along in their careers while continuing to improve his team.
“We’ve had 7 players in the last 6 months move on to higher levels. That’s a big deal – that means you’re improving their life.” said Rennie after the loss to the Minnesota Stars. “You’re improving their potential in their career, perhaps improving things for their families. That’s what we want to do. We want to help players develop. At the same time we are able to keep a good strong team in Cary. The players are motivated by the chance to go forward in their careers. We’re really excited about that. We want to keep this group together until the end of the season. But I still think there are more players on this team that can play at a higher level.”
“We’re only as good as our last game,” stated Rennie in regard to his team who filed out of the locker room very quietly after the game. “There’s a lot of very good players on this team who are working very hard. They’re determined to do well. They are hurt tonight and disappointed. But they are determined to bounce back for our next game which we plan to do Wednesday night.”
