Scott Lorenz to Join NSC Minnesota Stars on Loan from Sporting KC
Rumors had been flying since Friday evening’s Stars win against Montreal that Minnesota were looking to bolster their roster with another player. Speculation was that it would most likely be someone who could help in the midfield and would probably be a loan player from a Major League Soccer team. With the ties coach Manny Lagos has to Sporting KC’s head coach Peter Vermes, the odds were strong that the player might be coming from that team.
On Tuesday afternoon that cat was let out of the bag when former Stars player Scott Lorenz posted on Twitter, “Its official. I’m going on loan to @NSC_Minnesota . I’ll miss KC. @SportingKC @KCCauldron you guys have been incredible! Ill be back soon!”
While Lorenz said it’s official, the paper work still hasn’t been signed according to NSC Minnesota Stars CEO, Djorn Buchholz. “We’ve greed in principle but the paperwork’s not done yet,” said Buchholz. “Scotty will be leaving for Minnesota tomorrow and the paperwork should get signed in the morning.”
The loan will be for the remainder of the NASL season at which time Lorenz will return to Sporting KC. Loan players salaries are usually paid for by their MLS team.
Lorenz was signed by Sporting KC this spring after several trials with the team. He played in some preseason games for the team at left back and made a couple of appearances early in the MLS season. Since then the former UW Madison player has been starting and going 90 minutes in most of the reserve team games.
Lorenz was the last player signed by the Stars last season. He was named IMSoccer News and duNord Futbol Rookie of the Year last season. Lorenz ended the season as a starter for the team at left back. He finished the year with 1 assist in 21 appearances.
Minnesota’s defense has given up the second fewest goals in the league this year but have struggled in the outside midfield positions. Expect Lorenz to be placed at the left midfield position. The Barrington, Illinois native has good dribbling skills, decent speed and a very good left footed cross.
“Scotty played a lot of midfield for KC this season so he should fit right in at that position,” said Stars head coach Manny Lagos. “He knows the team, he knows the players and he knows how we play. I’m excited for him to be back and feel its a really nice fit. Scotty’s also excited to get some game time with us. It will be nice to have him for the rest of the season.”
Lorenz’ loan will still need to be approved by USSF. Lagos states that he doesn’t foresee any issues and expects Lorenz at practice by Thursday or Friday. The Stars do not play a league game again until August 6th when they travel to Montreal to play the Impact. However, the team will play an inter-squad scrimmage at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning at the NSC in Blaine, Minnesota. “I’d really like to get him in for that game,” said Lagos, who hopes Scotty will be ready to travel with the team to Montreal.

Excellent!
It’ll be good to see that guy marching down the wing again. Not that the new guys haven’t been stepping up to fill the gap he left, but seeing him in the midfield gives me good feelings about getting better service in to Nunez, Walker and Del Do.
VERY excited.
awesome.
Great news. Welcome back Scott!
It cracks me up how everybody is so excited to have him back when I spent the majority of last season debating with people how good of a player he is… including you Brian. =) I said it then, and I’ll say it now. Lorenz is a talent. Talk about bandwagon.
First, I’m writing an article, not making a statement one way or the other.
Secondly, Scotty looked to be a liability when he first started for the team. He did not look very good in those first few games in US Open Cup. He made some big mistakes. But to Scott’s credit he is one of those players who learns quickly from those mistakes and seems to improve every game. As you well know, not all players do that. I said that last year and still hold that as truth that he improved every game last year and continued to get better as the season progressed. Otherwise I would not have made him Rookie of the year along with Bruce from duNord. No band wagon jumping here.
Haha. Just giving you crap. But, I do have to make a correction. Scott played for Fire SC in the US Open Cup, not the Stars. I’m just saying that I saw what his potential was, and you didn’t necessarily agree with me. I’m not sayin’, I’m just sayin’. =) Just having some fun Brian.
And the “bandwagon jumping” comment wasn’t really directed towards you Brian. Just some of the Stars fans I have spoken to. I was just joking around a bit. Not looking to offend.
Someday someone somewhere is going to have a conversation about something positive that happens in soccer and not get accused of front-running.
