2011 Preseason Rankings Released of Minnesota High School Soccer Teams

The Minnesota State High School Soccer Coaches Association (MSHSSCA) released their first poll of the season. The preseason poll is taken every year at the MSHSSCA coaches clinic which took place this year on August 6th at Hopkins High School.

The MSHSSCA polls their participating coaches each week and those rankings are then released to the media throughout the season. Generally coaches vote in the first poll on teams’ previous year’s record and on how many players graduated or return to a program. The next poll will be released on September 6th.

This year’s poll sees a couple of familiar teams at top of the boys 2A rankings. Apple Valley once again leads the pack with last year’s very talented Minneapolis Southwest team coming in 2nd. Southwest will return many of their starters this season. The two teams met in last year’s MSHSL 2A final, with Apple Valley winning 3-0 and completing their 47th consecutive win and their 9th State Championship.

In boys 1A the top two teams also met in the state final which was arguably the best game of the tournament. Prairie Seeds Academy returns to the #1 ranking with Mankato East coming in second which is exactly how last year’s final ended. Prairie Seeds Academy defeated the Mankato East Cougars 3-2 which may have been Prairie Seeds’ toughest game of the year.

The girls 2A ranking sees the same two teams in the same order they finished their 2010 season. Eden Prairie tops the preseason chart with Wayzata coming in 2nd.

On the girls 1A side, the 2010 state champions, Rogers High School, sees themselves in 4th spot with runner-up Mahtomedi in 3rd place. Benilde-St. Margaret’s tops the 2011 preseason poll with Orono in 2nd place.

This year’s Mr. and Ms. Soccer for both boys and girls could be up for the taking this season with many of the more influential players over the last several years graduating in 2010.
