The University of Minnesota Women’s Soccer program split a pair of games this weekend in the Golden State. The weekend started on a poor note and ended brightly for the Gophers.

University of Minnesota 1-2 San Diego State University

On Friday evening, the team played San Diego State University and were defeated with a late goal in the 84th minute of play.

The Aztecs opened the scoring in the 29th minute on a goal by Hannah Keane. The Gophers pulled the game even just before the end of the half with a freshman combination. Sheridan Reiners passed to Becca Roberts who slotted the ball for the equalizer 7 seconds from the half.

In the second half SDSU dominated Minnesota and outshot them 13-3 in what Gopher head coach Mikki Denney Wright called one of the worst performances she has seen of her teams in the last several years. Tiffany Hurst received a ball for the Aztecs after a corner kick and penetrated into the Minnesota box. She crossed the ball to the far post where she found an unmarked Haley Palmer who had been the provider on SDSU’s first goal. Palmer made no mistake putting the Aztecs in front for good and defeating the Gophers 2-1.

University of Minnesota 1-0 UC Santa Barbara

Minnesota was able to turn their luck around on Sunday when they played UC Santa Barbara. The lone goal came from freshman Taylor Uhl who now has 4 goals on the season. Uhl’s goal came in the 26th minute of the first half. Junior forward Nicole Baier found her strike partner and Uhl did the rest by breaking through the Gaucho’s back line and finding the back of the net. Minnesota outshot Santa Barbara 18-6.
