Prairie Seeds Academy Stumble but Don’t Fall Against Strong St. Paul Central Squad

On the heels of one prep soccer powerhouse’s fall, St. Paul Central High School has caused another strong soccer team to stumble.

Tuesday evening at James Griffin Stadium in St. Paul, Minn., the Minutemen took on Prairie Seeds Academy (PSA) in a non-conference game. PSA’s undefeated streak still stands, unlike the Apple Valley Eagles who were defeated on Monday. However, PSA were pulled into a 3-3 draw with a spunky St. Paul Central squad and some questionable goalkeeping for PSA.

The draw is the first time since September 25th, 2010 that PSA had not won a game. The Lycans’ match against Central was their first of the season. PSA went 24 wins and 1 draw last year in a season that saw the team win the Class 1A MSHSL Boys Soccer Championship. That tie last September came against the Eagan Wildcats.

It was reported that Prairie Seeds Academy dominated most of this game but had their struggles as well. The first goal of the match was chalked up to a Central own-goal which occurred in the first half. But Central drew the game even before half time with a cross from Joe Elwell and a tap in from Abbai Habte.

Carlos Boquin put PSA up 2-1 on a free kick in the 2nd half of play. But Central’s Jonah Van Why rallied by scoring from a volley shot from 30 yards out.

Not long afterwards Van Why had a ball bounce off his knee from 20 yards out which hit the PSA crossbar. The goalkeeper didn’t handle the ball well and Getenet Tuji made sure from close range, knocking the ball into the net for the third Central goal, putting the Minutemen up 3-2.

Just before the end of regulation play a ball found its way to Boquin who was left unmarked. He slotted the ball home for the 3-3 draw.

The teams played through 2 five-minute overtime periods, but despite dominating play by the Lycans, the Minutemen were able to hold on for the tie.
