Minnesota Gold Classic This Weekend at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium
Gophersports.com – (Aug. 31, 2011)
The University of Minnesota women’s soccer team returns to Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium on Friday night for a clash with the Georgia Bulldogs in the Minnesota Gold Classic.
The two have squared off only once in history with the Bulldogs pulling out 2-0 home-field victory on August 28, 2009. The match was a battle between a pair of Top 20 teams with the Gophers being ranked No. 17 at the time and Georgia sitting just ahead of Minnesota at No. 16.
The Maroon and Gold have been putting on a weekend-long tournament since 2006. The Minnesota Gold Classic was formerly known as the Gopher Invitational until it changed to its current name in 2008. In the five years of the tournament, Minnesota has an overall record of 9-1 with the lone loss coming in a 3-2 overtime loss to Dayton on September 14, 2007.
Last Time Out
The Gophers are coming off a 1-0 win against UC Santa Barbara that came on the road. Freshman Taylor Uhl scored the only goal needed to pull out the victory in the 26th minute of the match while Cat Parkhill tallied her 17th career shutout.
Scouting Georgia
The Bulldogs (1-2-0) come to the Twin Cities after losing a pair of matches in its weekend home opener with Texas (L, 3-0) and Villanova (L, 3-2). The Red and Black are led offensively by senior Jaime Pollock and sophomore Alex Newfield. Pollock is the current points leader on the squad with four (2 goals) while Newfield has tallied a team-high 11 shots for the season. In goal for Georgia will likely be junior Ashley Baker who has recorded nine saves and played every minute for the Bulldogs this season.
Minnesota Gold Classic
The Golden Gophers play host to the Iowa State Cyclones, Georgia Bulldogs and No. 20-ranked UW-Milwaukee Panthers for 2011 Minnesota Gold Classic.
