Gopher Women’s Soccer Lose to Georgia Bulldogs in Overtime
The University of Minnesota women’s soccer team (2-3-0) lost a tough one to the Georgia Bulldogs on Friday night in the Minnesota Gold Classic. The Gophers dominated the match in nearly every aspect but the final result. Alexa Newfield scored the winning goal for the Bulldogs just 1:17 into the first overtime to give Georgia at 2-1 victory.
Neither team were able to score in the first half despite Minnesota’s 9 shots forcing the Bulldogs goalkeeper Ashley Baker into 4 saves.
It was Georgia’s Meghan Gibbons who got her team on the board first with a 77th minute goal unassisted. She created her own one-on-one with Gopher goalkeeper Cat Parkhill who swatted down the ball for the initial stop but Gibbons picked up the rebound and notched her team’s first of the night.
The Gophers answered in the 84th minute with a goal headed in by Shari Eckstrom with an assist to Oliva Bagnall who took the corner kick.
With the score tied the game went into overtime but it was the Bulldogs who scored, giving Minnesota their 3rd defeat of the season.
