Week #23 NASL Players of the Week: Mozzi Gyorio & John Jonke
Tampa, Fla. (September 12, 2011)
FC Tampa Bay midfielder Mozzi Gyorio (pronounced Mozz-ee Gee-or-ee-oh) has been named the North American Soccer League Offensive Player of the Week for Week 23.
Gyorio scored the game-winning goal for FC Tampa Bay in last Tuesday’s 2-1 victory at NSC Minnesota, clinching the club’s first-ever playoff berth. Gyorio curled a free kick from 27 yards out around the wall, off the post and into the net for the game-winner in the 77th minute.
“It was definitely a big win for us to make the playoffs and now that we are in, we want to try and finish strong and keep the winning mentality going,” said Gyorio. “It is always an honor to win an award, but the main thing is that the team is playing well and you can never do it without your own teammates. Hopefully we keep this good form going into the playoffs.”
Gyorio has seen action in 22 games with 18 starts this season, and has scored two goals, both on free kicks. The award marks the eighth time an FC Tampa Bay player has received a weekly NASL award, second-most for any league team this season, trailing only Carolina.
FC Edmonton (September 12, 2011)
FC Edmonton defender John Jonke has been named the Defensive Player of the Week by the NASL.
Jonke was instrumental in his team’s 2-1 victory over the Atlanta Silverbacks on Sept. 7, a game in which FC Edmonton claimed a playoff spot in its first ever season of NASL competition. Jonke played the full 90 minutes and was named Man of the Match by FCETV Play-by-Play host Gareth Hampshire and Co-Commentator Steven Sandor.
Jonke followed that performance up with another strong effort on Sept. 11 against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. Jonke scored his team’s only goal of the game and despite losing 2-1 in injury time, Jonke was solid at the back throughout the match, helping to organize a strong defensive effort for FCE.
Jonke has played 17 games for FC Edmonton in the NASL this season and has one goal.

Jonke didn’t have a real opportunity to show what he could do when he was here in Baltimore with Crystal Palace. The technical staff spoke well of him when I asked them.
Both he and another ex-Baltimore playe, Evan Bush are performing well these days. Always nice to see players move on into a better situation for themselves professionally.
