Minnesota Stars Celebrate their Clinching of NASL Playoff Spot
The NSC Minnesota Stars were able to hang on to a 2-1 lead they took in the 52nd minute against the Carolina RailHawks in Cary, North Carolina on Saturday evening. In doing so the team clinched the 6th and final NASL playoff spot. Making it more dramatic, the Montreal Impact had defeated the Atlanta Silverbacks 4-0 with that game finishing just 15 minutes before the Stars’ contest ended. The night started off with Minnesota just one point ahead of Montreal, so the Stars had to hold onto the win against the regular season champion Carolina RailHawks or they would be eliminated from the playoffs. They did hold onto the win and and in doing so clinched the final spot and sent Montreal to MLS in 2012 without even making the playoffs in their final season as a Division 2 team.
After the victory, the Stars didn’t do much celebrating on the field. And with an early departure for the airport at 4:30 a.m EST it didn’t leave too much time to celebrate after the game either. But they did find time to do a little celebrating down in the locker room at WakeMed Stadium where they popped the bottle caps on the water bottles, did some singing and had some fun.
Here is some video of that celebration. The joy is infectious. I guess this is why we play the game.
