Golden Gophers Soccer Team Splits Big Ten Weekend Road Trip
It’s said that inconsistency is often a trait of young teams. That held true with the U of M Golden Gopher soccer team this weekend as they partook in their first Big Ten road trip. The team split a pair of games this weekend. They defeated Michigan on Friday night with a big 3-2 comeback win. Then they lost to Michigan State 3-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Minnesota 3-2 Michigan
In Friday’s match it was Minnesota who got on the board first with a Lauren Bauer goal from a Josie Solie corner kick. But the Gophers let the Wolverines right back into the game on an errant back pass that was stolen and scored on by Nkem Ezurike. Just before the half the Gophers were called on a penalty kick which Clare Stachel scored on for Michigan.
The second half saw freshman forward Taylor Uhl score in the 68th minute to tie the game. It would be Uhl again, scoring her 7th of the season for Minnesota in dramatic fashion to win the game. Uhl was assisted by Marissa Price who stole a Michigan pass at midfield passing quickly to Nicole Baier. Her pass over the top of the defense found a sprinting Uhl who went one-on-one with Michigan’s goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer and slotting the ball low to the right to win the game in the 90th minute of play.
Michigan State 3-0 Minnesota
Sunday’s game against Michigan State was a losing affair for the Gophers. Unlike Friday night’s game, they were not able to recover from their defensive mistakes and lost 3-0. Minnesota (4-6-1, 1-1-1 Big Ten) gave up goals in the 29th, 56th and 68th minutes of play.
A frustrated coach Mikki Denney Wright told GopherSports.com after the game, “I take full responsibility for the loss today. Clearly, I wasn’t a good enough coach for our team today. This performance is on me, and we will work to have a better performance next week.”
