Augsburg College Take First Defeat at Home Since 2009; Carleton Move to Top of MIAC Standings
The Augsburg men’s soccer team moved up the NCAA DIII rankings this past week rising to #15 in the country. That didn’t help them Saturday evening when they took only their 2nd loss of the season to Carleton College. Even more remarkably, it was the Auggies’ first loss at home since 2009.
It would take an 84th minute strike by the Knights’ Simon Ginet to win the game. Unassisted, he intercepted an Auggie pass and blew his shot by Augsburg goalkeeper Clayton Lynch for the winning goal. Lynch was called upon to make 3 saves on the night while Carleton’s keeper, James Neher needed to make 5 saves to give his team the clean sheet.
The Knights’ (conference 4-0-1,overall 7-3-2) win moved them up the standings into 1st place but just one point above Augsburg (conference 1-1-0,overall 8-2-1).
You can find both Augsburg and Carleton at the top of the standings most seasons, battling for the title and fighting for a NCAA playoff spot. It’s no different this year as they are joined by Gustavus and Macalester (the preseason coaches’ pick to win the conference) all fighting for the top spot.
With 3 weeks left of the regular season we check in on the very tight MIAC standings. Four teams, Carleton, Gustavus, Augsburg and Macalester, are all battling for the top spot with only 1 point separating them. St. Olaf is just 3 points off the lead with St. Thomas coming in at 6th place, just 4 points off the top spot.
