Gopher Soccer Team defeats Northwestern with Goal by Phillips
The University of Minnesota women’s soccer team notched their 3rd conference win of the season on Sunday. The Gophers defeated Northwestern College 1-0 on a lone goal by junior midfielder, Allie Phillips. Junior Olivia Bagnall crossed from the left flank which found Phillips streaking through the box. Her first-time shot beat the Wildcats goalkeeper Anna Cassell and broke the deadlock in the 60th minute of play.
The Gophers held onto the 1-goal lead and saw the game out to its conclusion.
The weekend split was the last regular season road trip for the Gophers. The team is now 6-8-2 overall and 3-3-2 in the Big Ten.
“Today was a great rebound performance for our group,” said head coach Mikki Denney Wright. “We are becoming more mature and consistent with each game.”
The Gophers return home for their last three matches of the season. Their first contest is Friday, October 21 as they play host to Indiana. Kick off is 7 p.m.
The team will then host Purdue on Sunday, October 23. That game will kick off at 1:00 p.m.
The last game of the season will be on Friday evening, October 28th when the Gophers take on Nebraska.
