The Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Wild have purchased tickets to the first leg of the North American Soccer League Championship Series between the Minnesota Stars and the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. The Twins purchased 500 tickets to the game, and the Vikings and Wild each purchased 250. The teams have turned around and put the tickets up to grabs for Minnesota sports fans who contact the Stars to claim a pair.

“The Minnesota Twins organization congratulates the Minnesota Stars on a thrilling win over Carolina last week,” said Twins president Dave St. Peter. “We ask fans across Twins Territory to get behind the Stars as they attempt to win the NASL title.”

Fans can reserve a pair of tickets to the final match by calling (763) 792-7348 or emailing tickets@nscminnesota.com. There is a two-ticket limit per person. Tickets will be left at will call at the stadium on gameday. Fans can purchase additional tickets starting at $6 for youth general admission and $12 for adults. Reserved seats with chairbacks and on-field seats are also available.

“We really appreciate the support that the professional sports community in the Twin Cities is showing us during our championship run,” Stars CEO Djorn Buchholz said. “We hope their ticket purchases will introduce new fans to the sport of soccer at this exciting time for our club.”

This is the biggest act of support of professional soccer in this country from a pro franchise opearting in a different sport. What is even more remarkable is that there is no shared ownership. Add to that that there are three different franchises, in three different sports.

    Wow!

This really is a remarkable act of goodwill by the other Minnesota pro sports franchises. I really, really hope it pays off for the Stars by getting a lot of new people to give soccer a try. In the end that’s all we can ask of marketing ideas, getting fans to make the decision to come try the product. Once they are there, it becomes a matter of getting them to come back. Exciting playon the field, and a good atmosphere at the stadium are the key factors of course. Let’s hope the Stars have a great crowd for the first leg, because I know we’re going to have one for the second leg in Lockhart.

This is the second time the Twins has done something like this. They bought tickets to the Minnesota Lynx first playoff game. Not surprising other sports teams would do something like this with all the positive publicity the Twins got. Now the question is when the Stars when the title where will the parade be?

Maybe Wilf will buy the Stars seeing how he is suposedly interested in bringing MLS to Minnesota. But it also could be that he is just trying to get a new stadium for the Vikes.

To my understanding, these tickets are now gone (or very few remain).

I really hope this works of the team and they have their largest attendance of the season!

I also hope that they have people in place around the stadium trying to sell season tickets to increase the attendance for next year.

Coach Lagos has done a great job these past two years with difficult circumstances at best. Two years ago he had no time and no budget to get the team going under NSC’s ownership and this year he had almost no time and no budget with the league owning the team. I can’t imagine what he could do with time and money!

    Good luck you Stars!
