As an ardent FC Edmonton fan, I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate the NSC Minnesota Stars on winning the NASL title. For the second time in as many seasons, the team claiming the final playoff spot has run the table for the title. Minnesota came on when it counted, down the stretch, and seeing the Stars playing against the Strikers in the final, while somewhat surprising at first, was completely understandable when you looked at the final month of the season.
I understand that the team has struggled for support during the season, and I hope for the sake of the team and the league, that this championship serves as a catalyst to develop support for the team. We, as a league, need you. With San Antonio coming on board next season, and Ottawa in 2013 or 2014, the presence of Minnesota is vital to the status of the NASL as more than a regional league. Hell, Edmonton needs you as our closest geographic and most important rival. The Eddies may have won the Flyover Cup, but all credit to the Stars, you won the big one, good on you.
Here’s to an exciting and enjoyable 2012 that fans in all NASL teams can get behind. For those of us already supporting the teams, make it your mission to convert one friend to the game every year. In this way, our teams, our league and our game will succeed.
Once again, Congrats to the Stars and your fans.
Damn it’s tough to look at someone other than the Strikers holding a trophy on the pitch at Lockhart, but the Stars earned it. Enjoy it Minnesota. The red & gold will be looking for revenge in 2012
