U.S. Men’s National Team U-23 Training Camp Roster Call-Ups
U.S. Men’s U-23 National Team Coach Caleb Porter has named his roster for the upcoming training camp to be held between November 6-17 in Duisburg, Germany. Porter was recently appointed by the USSF as the U-23 coach, but will not actually be present at the camp as he will be leading his University of Akron Zips towards the conclusion of another successful NSCAA season. In his place, former U.S. internationals Claudio Reyna and Tab Ramos will run the camp, with the assistance of another new appointee, U-18 men’s coach Richie Williams.
Thirty one players have been called into the camp thus far. Twelve of the American players called up play their soccer in Germany, which probably not only reflects on the success of Nurnberg’s young Timothy Chandler this year with the senior USMNT, but the heavy investment German clubs make in player development. Also highlighting the selections are Michigan native Josh Gatt, who’s had a breakout season for Molde in Norway (which will get Champions League play next season) under the tutelage of former Manchester United great Ole Gunnar Solskjær, and Joe Corona, the 21 year-old Mexican-American who has played in 12 Mexican Primera Division Apertura games so far this season for Club Tijuana, scoring two goals. Eight MLS players were also named to the squad, with a few more possibly to be added from the ranks of MLS teams depending on the outcomes of the MLS playoffs.
The U-23 camp, which includes several players who are still age-eligible for the U-20 team, will coordinate with Coach Jurgen Klinsmann’s senior squad, who will be training at the same time for November friendlies against France and Slovenia. According to Klinsmann, “It is very important that we are all on the same page in how we are working with the national teams and that we are all pulling in the same direction, since all roads lead to the senior team. They will have full support from the National Team, and their camps will be run just like ours. In this initial camp they will gather as much information as possible. As this group gets together, it is important for all these players to understand that they have a very unique opportunity”
Porter will also conduct camps early in 2012 to prepare for 2012 Olympic qualifying, which begins in March.
