LA Galaxy and Houston Dynamo Heading to the 2011 MLS Cup Final
Two MLS Conference Championship games were played on Sunday night to determine the winners of the Eastern and Western Conference Championships.
The Houston Dynamo defeated Sporting KC by a score of 2-0 to claim the Eastern Conference Championship and punch themselves a ticket to the MLS Cup final in Los Angeles on November 20th.
Goals by the Dynamo’s Andre Hainault in the 53rd and Carlo Costly in the 87th minute were all it took as Tally Hall grabbed the shutout ending a very good season for Sporting KC.
The LA Galaxy were winners over Real Salt Lake by a score of 3-1. The win gives LA the Western Conference Championship.
LA took the lead on this one when Omar Gonzalez was taken down from behind in RSL’s penalty box by Andy Williams in the 23rd minute. Landon Donovan converted the PK to take the lead 1-0. But Real Salt Lake came back just 2 minutes later with a goal by Alvaro Saborio.
Thirteen minutes into the 2nd half of play LA went up for good with a goal by Mike Magee; a header from a patented David Beckham cross from the right side of the field. Irishman Robbie Keane scored his third of the season for LA in the 68th minute with a spectacular one-on-one effort. The victory for the Galaxy sends them to the final which will be a right in their “Home” Depot Center stadium.

I thought this year’s MLS season was really exciting. Daughter #2 and I watch most of the weekly matches on ESPN2, and I also subscribed to the MLS www service and caught my fair share of matches. It is good to see a team like the Dynamo make the finals. There is a lot of excitement around this club and the building of their new soccer-specific stadium. (They have a ton of photos on their Facebook site.)
I would encourage anyone who has the slightest interest in soccer to tune into the final match. This very well could be the last time Beckham plays for an American club. Also, Keane has been playing some great soccer.
Thanks for covering MLS, BQ!
