Brother and sister Brent and Kassey Kallman each will see at least one more game of post season action after this weekend’s NCAA D1 soccer tournament matches. Kassey’s Florida State University Seminoles (18-6-1) defeated the University of Virginia last Friday by a score of 3-0. The win propels them to the semifinals of the College Cup. Brent’s #2 ranked Creighton Bluejays (20-2-0) downed UC Santa Barbara 2-1 on Sunday. They will not play in the quarterfinals of the tournament.

FSU 2-0 Virginia
The Florida State Seminoles are returning to the NCAA College Cup for the fifth time in school history after downing Virginia 2-0 last Friday. Minnesota defender Kassey Kallman again went the distance and again her Seminole defense earned a clean sheet. The FSU defense behind keeper Kelsey Wys has now notched clean sheets 3 of their 4 games played in the NCAA Tournament and have allowed only 1 goal.

Kallman also earned herself another assist in Friday’s quarterfinal game on FSU’s second goal scored by Dagny Brynjarsdottir in the 71st minute.

FSU will now face undefeated and #1 ranked Stanford University (23-0-1) in the semifinals of the tournament. Stanford has scored 9 goals in the tournament and like FSU has only allowed 1 goal into their own net. FSU has scored 10 goals in the postseason tourney. The semifinal in Kennesaw, Ga., site of the 2011 Women’s College Cup, will be played next Friday, December 2 and it has all the markings of a great matchup.

Creighton 2-1 UC Santa Barbara
The Creighton Bluejays allowed only their 5th goal of the season to be scored against them on Sunday in their round of 16 NCAA tournament game. But Minnesotans Brent Kallman and Eric Miller’s Bluejays held on to their 1-goal lead to defeat UC Santa Barbara 2-1 in Omaha, Nebraska. With temperatures hanging around 36 degrees and windy conditions, the Bluejays scored early in the game when Bruno Castro scored his 6th goal of the season on a penalty kick awarded in the 7th minute. Andrew Ribeiro scored his 4th of the season when he blasted in from the 19th minute. From there Creighton locked the doors and played their typical lock-tight defense. But as the game wore on UC Santa Barbara had more chances. Eventually David Opoku scored for UCSB in the 79th minute. But the Bluejays were able to hold on and advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Miller logged in a full 90 minutes and Kallman played a key role as a substitute playing 26 minutes.

The Creighton win was the 300th for Creighton head coach Elmar Bolowich, who moved to Creighton after 22 years with UNC. Bolowich is now 22-13-4 in NCAA Tournament games and one win away from his fourth straight trip to the College Cup.

The competition now stiffens as the Bluejays head to the quarterfinals and will face South Florida (13-3-4) next Saturday at Morrison Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska.

Looks like Creighton is a great place to play soccer especially for a defender. They have an SSS and a great coach that has tutored 11 players in the MLS including Eddie Pope. This one is on my short list.
