BQ,

Are 18,000 seats not enough for MLS standards?

San Jose got the green light on their $60 million 18,000 seat stadium.

Kudos to the Scorpions for having a fantastic start. Hopefully they can keep this up.

As always BQ thanks for keeping all of us D2 fans as well informed as any other site out there!

All valid points of course as always BQ. I think the club has created this...momentum...is the best word I can think of that's been steadily building since the expansion announcement. They've continually done events and made a fanfare of passing mileposts on the way to kicking off their first game. I think from a marketing standpoint it's been top notch all the way. Now we all now that marketing and the reality behind the scenes don't always match up perfectly. I'm guessing that the long range plan that Hitchcock and Hartman came up with said this is about the right time in the timeline to be doing the stadium ground-breaking in order to keep that wave of momentum moving forward and growing. So far it's worked. If they aren't able to keep these things happening at the pace they're laying out, will the momentum falter? Could be. A fun gameday experience, and an exciting team on the field will help deflect some of that I'm guessing.

Ultimately you have to believe that owning and controlling their own SSS is the ONLY shot in heck they have at being profitable in all this, and even then it's certainly no guarantee at all. I certainly don't diasgree with your questions, they are completely valid, and they should be answered. But their record to date, brief as it is, almost inspires you to give them the benefit of the doubt. Now I know full well that's the idea, it's good marketing. But as a fan of any team in the NASL, you have to hope that every team, not just yours, is capable of living up to it's part in keeping this thing going.

Strikers Return, I too am impressed with the Scorpions but lets not get so giddy yet about the groundbreaking ceremony. As pointed out here, readers at IMS are pretty smart and informed and I appreciate that. But sometimes we have a tendency to take things at face value and not ask questions. I wouldn't be doing my job without asking questions and let me tell you, there are plenty of unanswered questions about this groundbreaking next Wed. From everything I can find so far, and its not easy getting information, there is really very little yet known about the stadium and I really don't believe they are ready to start construction. I'm trying to dig into things as are a few other writers but it's feeling like they are jumping the gun on the groundbreaking and I'm not sure why.

Here's some questions to be answered:

Who is financing this?
How much will it cost?
Are the plans yet approved by the city?
Has a contractor even been given a contract yet? (From my understanding bids close today)
What are the timelines on the construction?
Why did the stadium stop in phase 5 at 18,000 when MLS would certainly want a bigger stadium if they really have those sort of ambitions?
Is that area zoned or set up to allow a stadium of that size?

I have more questions than that but these are the things everyone should be asking. I'm not saying it's not going to happen but what's the rush on the groundbreaking?

@BQ - Good stuff filling in for Gerry! I'm also anxious to see what Otte can do in MF for the Strikers. Right now MF looks like the weakest part of the team with all the departures we had. Restrepo was good in the second half and if Otte and Lorenz can effectively fill holes in MF as well, I think we may not wind up dropping off as far as I feared.

I continue to be as impressed as can be with the Scorpions. They seem to have made every right move you can think of since the announcement of their team through now. The last thing all the haters have been rolling their eyes at is the stadium. When's that ground-breaking event coming? There is great excitement for the Scorpions in SA from everything I've seen, heard, and read. I think they have a bright future ahead of them, and they're looking exactly like the quality of organization the NASL needs to make a stable and respectable D2 a long term proposition.

I hate the Rowdies. Man oh man is it GOOD to be able to say that again for the first time in DECADES! I CANNOT WAIT for this season to get started! I have a feeling it's going to be solid, and will build upon last year for the entire league. And no amount of lameass weak attempt at jokes from Bart (even if they are directed at the Rowdies!) is going to dampen my optimism. Everyone get out there and support your teams! Bring your friends, your co-workers, your neighbors, let's increase the attendance in each of the 7 returning markets, and I am already confident SA is going to show well at the gate too!

As my friend Bruce from duNord often says, you don't have to waste your time looking around the internet for the news. I'll give you all the links and stories you need right here. :)

I will admit it is a bit out of character from the rest of the league but they have a number of 3-year contracts out there with players. I also have to tell you that I was very pleasantly surprised how forthcoming the team was about their player contracts when I had some questions for them in January. In fact they were about the most open of any of the NASL teams when it came to contract details. It's nice to see that sort of transparency from Tampa Bay.

I'm also very glad to see that the Rowdies and Stars have moved their May 26th game to the 25th to keep from competing with the USMNT. That puts the game on a Friday, but I think it's still good foresight from all those involved in the scheduling decision.
