NASL Podcast Episode #24 – Interview with Tampa Bay Rowdies Head Coach Ricky Hill

2012 March 20
by Brian Quarstad

Welcome to episode #24 of the IMSoccer News North American Soccer League Podcast.

In the upcoming weeks, Gerry Wittmann , Jay (Yankiboy) Long, and yours truly, Brian Quarstad, will be interviewing all 8 NASL head coaches.

This week Jay, Gerry and I talk to Tampa Bay Rowdies head coach Ricky Hill.

Hill had a stellar career playing in England, spending most of his years at Luton Town. He made multiple appearances for the England National Team and eventually made his way to the states where he played for the Rowdies in the early ’90s.

In recent years Hill has turned to coaching. He took over the Tampa Bay Rowdies in 2011 guiding the team to their first playoff game and finishing the season 3rd in the NASL regular season standings. But Hill is not satisfied with his 3rd place finish and set out to reshape the team through the winter in order to bring a winning side to the Rowdies for the 2012 season.

Please join Jay, Gerry and me as we talk to coach Ricky Hill about this year’s roster, preseason training and his style of play.

I loved it when Coach Hill said, “…and at the end of the day…” Not quite like a Manny-verbalized semi-colon, but it ranks right up there.

once again thanks for these interviews. Always nice to listen to Ricky Hill speak. The fans down here really warmed up to him over the course of the season last year. Once he got the team playing the way he wanted them to we did very well.

With the talent level so far looking even higher than last season, I expect big things this year.

Maybe you guys will get your shot at Orlando in a USOC match. I, for one, would LOVE to see THAT match!

I am sure that Orlando would be glad to have a shot at their upper division competitory in St. Peterburg. I cannot imagine how they would think they have a shot in winning, given that they are in a much less talented, and lower division than the goblet lover trio.

May the sweet smell of creamed spinach and aged beef be the prize to the winner!

Wow, the bad grammar and spelling from a new I Phone. It is embarassing.

Really, that’s going to be your excuse, Bart? ;)

Love mine even though I can’t see anything at distance for a while after staring at the phone for a couple of minutes.

Signed, too stubborn to get bifocals and getting old.

I am sure glad I have never made a typo on my iPhone…especially when posting to IMS.

I hope we do get a game between the Rowdies and the Orlando seaLions. I think it’d be bigger for casual fans and the supporters than either ownership group currently thinks. Plenty of bragging rights on the line and it’d be the true beginning of what could be a nice rivalry.

It’s baloney to think that we can’t be rivals just because we don’t play in the same division, however I admit that while I’ve been one of the many playing pretend rival online with them that it’d be nice to have an actual game and some on field context to base a rivalry on :D

Unfortunately, the only way we could meet in the USOC is if we both advance to the third round (should happen, but let’s all take one game at a time) and then both manage to defeat whatever MLS competition we face in that round.

Considering both teams’ records against higher competition so far, I’d say we both have a decent chance of accomplishing this.
