NASL Podcast Episode #27 – Interview with San Antonio Head Coach Tim Hankinson

2012 April 10
by Brian Quarstad

Welcome to episode #27 of the IMSoccer News North American Soccer League Podcast.

In the upcoming weeks, Gerry Wittmann , Jay (Yankiboy) Long, and yours truly, Brian Quarstad, will be interviewing all 8 NASL head coaches.

So far we’ve interviewed Carolina RailHawks coach Colin Clarke, Tampa Bay Rowdies’ Ricky Hill, Atlanta Silverbacks’ Alex Pineda Chacón, and FC Edmonton’s Harry Sinkgraven.

This week’s guest is expansion team San Antonio Scorpions’ head coach, Tim Hankinson.

Hankinson is certainly one of the most experienced coaches in the NASL having coached since 1979. He has coached two MLS teams, the Tampa Bay Mutiny and the Colorado Rapids, and has been involved with coaching US National Teams at the youth level. He helped to start the Charleston Battery, has coached many college teams and spent a bit of time in Europe coaching as well.

Last Saturday evening, Hankinson helped his new team get their first-ever point in the NASL with a draw against Atlanta.

Jay, Gerry and I also take a few minutes to run down this past week’s opening games.

Please join Jay, Gerry and me in this latest episode of the IMSoccer News NASL Podcast.

“Only bad players need a system.” –Coach Hankinson

I can’t wait to see the Scorpions play in MN…and would love to get down to SA and watch a match. This is the kind of coach I would love to sit down with post-match, drink some Surly and talk soccer. I feel stimulated after listening to this podcast and I am going to have to re-listen to it later on today so I can absorb everything. This is great stuff!

Great questions by Gerry, Jay and Brian!

8,000 tickets have been sold for the opener. Check out Scorpions Facebook page.
I would post a link, but work has blocked my access to Facebook.

If I am not mistaken he also coached in India for Salgaocar S.C. in the I-League (top tier). Hopefully you all remember Johnny Monyengar who is a former Minnesota player, he is now playing in India.

Anyway I just want to know if you can just get one more question from Tom,

What is the difference between the quality you are experiencing here in the NASL to one of your previous stints in India?

I just want to see what he thinks the difference is between the 2nd Division of the United States to the 1st Division of India.

Good interview as always gentlemen. Coach Hankinson sounds like a great teacher of the game. Best of luck to him and the Scorpions this year (except against my Strikers!).

@Gerry – You KNOW I’ve been on cloud 9 since Saturday night! First off, we need to tell it like it is – that red card against the youngster Hassan was completely absurd. But as was apparently the case in Bayamon, going down a man seemed to improve the play of the home side. The Strikers controlled much of the game in the second half, it was difficult to tell they down a man. Lorenz played a teriffic game and made a superb cross to Herron for the winner. Restrepo was the dominant player of the match in midfield, and as long as he continues to play at that level, the Strikers will be in very good shape. Missed Orozco in the back, not sure why he didn’t play, but the back four did a good job anyway, and Glaeser had a brilliant save on a breakaway late in the first half to keep the game scoreless.

All in all I’m very pleased with the way the Strikers played. They’ve got a nice mix of veterans and youth, and I’m seeing a lot of potential. Well, except for Morales who Shore just continues to insist on playing despite seeing nothing at all worthwhile from him. I’d love to see Otte starting in his place this Saturday. Was disappointed by the Strikers attendance, espacially in light of what we’ve seen other places around the league and what I expect we’ll see this weekend in San Antonio and Tampa. Tight budgeting is really hurting the team this year because I think some advertising on the level some other clubs seem to be working at would make a big difference down here.
