Personally think Kicks is a bad idea. Not the same crowd that an MLS team would be trying to attract (21-35 year old/no memory or nostalgia) and Kicks doesn't have any real identification of the area like Sounders, Whitecaps and Timbers have. They all represent something in the area as does the Cosmos with New York City. Kicks??? Totally generic and has no tie-in to the area except nostalgia.

I truly do not understand the deep amount of skepticism that some people hold on the subject of the Wilfs desire to acquire an MLS franchise for the new stadium.

It is the ideal way for them to continue to generate income for themselves during the summer months. 20 to 30 dates guarenteed.

They have mentioned it in every proposal the team has actively persued. They have met with league officials on the subject. They have never wavered or said anything in public otherwise on the subject.

As a matter of fact, when one of the legislators tried to strip the Wilfs 5 year exclusive rights to bring the MLS to the stadium, the objections from the organization were instant and vehement.

Other than a skepticism to big business in general (which I possess to a certain extent), there would be nothing to gain for the Wilfs to make the claim and then reneg on it. The extra political support he gained from it was and is neglible, at best. Believe me, there is nobody in the statehouse who is in the pocket of "Big Soccer". And if the totality of lawmakers involved got as many as a hundred e-mails, letters and/or phone calls between them specifically mentioning the proposed soccer club as a motivation to support the project, I'd be shocked.

I don't know if it is the case here, but sometimes it looks as if some people are afraid that soccer will become so successful as a sport in this country that it will be rendered useless as "contrarian cred".

Speaker Zellers certainly shoulders some blame for not getting the necessary votes in the House. Don't get me started on the MN Senate. However, Dayton was AWOL early on in the process and did not include the Republican leaders in the House and Senate when he made his "deal" with the city of Minneapolis and the Vikings. It was almost like he forget what he learned in high school government that the legislature passes bills, and the governor signs the bills into law. Dayton needs to step up and work with the GOP and stop the partisan gamesmanship.

On the issue of bringing MLS to MN, I am not optimistic that Zigi will bring a team to town. However, if he does, I think the team should be called the Minnesota Buzz. This name would honor Buzz Lagos and his vision for soccer in Minnesota.

Appreciate the fine tuning, and I am not a tax expert. I imagine most players can afford tax advice that would push them to being residents of other states for the off-season months. Also, as the Vikings players would get taxed in the state of their performances, so would MN tax visiting players. Thus, I used one team for purposes of a rough estimate, instead of 50% of Vikings (8 games) and 6% Packers, etc. It roughly adds up to 100% of a team salary. And with player salaries out-performing inflation (since they are tied to league revenue; driven by TV deals) whatever the benefit is over time will likely increase (I just didn't feel like modeling the rise in NFL salaries].

@ Dave

Unfortunately, MN does not receive the full benefit of the State income tax from the players, unless they are full time residents of MN and all of the games are played in MN. For the most part, State income taxes are deducted from where they work, in this case, the away game NFL cities and States. Then, since most players are paid over a 12 month period, the State they reside in takes the remainder of the State income tax, unless you are in Texas or Florida, non-income tax States.

It can get very complicated on this side, but teh bottem line is that the State income tax analysis is not as great for MN as one would think it would or should be.

Economists generally agree that economic impact statements are over-inflated, and that intangible benefits are often too difficult to forecast with precision. However, in a state like Minnesota, one can look at the tax benefits of an NFL fairly easily. The NFL salary cap is 120M, and the State taxes income @ just under 8%; thus, there is roughly about 9M in annual tax revenue just from the NFL players. (Add some of the coaches and front office staff and it will be a bit higher). The state would not make this up if the team left MN because the labor force is so specialized (i.e., NFL players). Assuming player salaries never increase (yeah, right), the State would receive about 270M over the next 30 years - about the length of time we had the Dome. And the current State contribution is about 300M. I can see the State waiving its expected tax revenue if the policy-makers decide there are other benefits (which really don't have to be that large to make it worthwhile for the State); especially since the loss of te team would be a quick 9M reduction in taxes, plus the economic consequences of re-purposing the Dome to a venue that better suits the economic realities.
