Welcome to episode #34 of the IMSoccer News North American Soccer League Podcast.
This week Gerry Wittmann , Jay (Yankiboy) Long, and yours truly, Brian Quarstad, run down all this past week’s NASL matches.
We also talk to our special guest, U.S. Open Cup Expert Josh Hakala. If you like the Open Cup you are probably familiar with Hakala or at least have visited his website, TheCup.us. Hakala is editor of the website that is the most comprehensive of any dedicated to the 99-year-old tournament. Hakala has been running TheCup.us website now for 10 years and has great insight into the recent history of the tournament. In this podcast Hakala joins Gerry, Jay and me to preview the 3rd round matches of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
Jay also fills us in on the Islanders’ quest to win their domestic competition, the CFU. Is it possible that an NASL team could be matched up against a USL PRO team in this competition? Jay tells us on this latest episode of the IMSoccer News NASL Podcast.

While everyone knows the Stars will beat RSL, I am going out on a limb and say the DirtyHacks will beat the Galaxy. You can take that to the bank! #TakeThierMoneyAndRun
^ Spoken like a true NASL fan. The only NASL side I see advancing is the RailHawks. The Galaxy as expected brought the C squad and would rather be anywhere else than Cary, NC.
What is sad though is almost none of the American soccer media is talking about the U.S. Open Cup. All the talk is about the Nats win against Scotland and the game against Brazil. It is a shame the media doesn’t care about the Open Cup. Would it have killed Grant Wahl to write about it instead of some friendly?
Should be interesting games. I hope Atlanta got a good payday for the sell to Seattle. Same with Minnesota. I like the fact that the home side can sell their game to the away side and make extra money. I think it might be a good idea for the USSF to give the lower seeded teams the home game to give them the option to sell. It could help NASL and USL-Pro become more Stable.
@Kel: Plenty of articles this mornings about Open Cup on mlssoccer.com.
@Kel, “The Galaxy as expected brought the C squad and would rather be anywhere else than Cary, NC.”
I think I have been watching the LA Galaxy’s C squad the entire season. For a team that is -6 on goal differential and has not won in 7 matches (correct me if I am wrong), you would think they are desperate for a win–even if it means beating one of the worst teams in the NASL.
come on Stars and Fort Lauderdale!!!
@Kel, lots of MLS teams advancing in the USOC 2012, right?
Kel got owned. MLS 7-7, NASL 3-2, USL Pro 3-4 and PDL 1-1. Great day of games.
