The Quarterfinals of the US Open Cup are now set after Tuesday night’s 4th round action. Left standing are the Harrisburg City Islanders, Dayton Dutch Lions and the Charlotte Eagles, all of USL PRO. On the MLS side, the Philadelphia Union, Sporting KC, San Jose Earthquakes, Seattle Sounders and Chivas all remain to play one more round.

The NASL side Carolina RailHawks were defeated despite a very good showing in front of a home crowd of 7,117. It took a Juan Pablo Angel penalty kick in added time to break the 1-1 deadlock.

The San Antonio Scorpions learned not to underestimate a lower division opponent even if that lower level team is on the road. The Scorpions came from behind to knot up the score 1-1 but Charlotte scored a penalty kick in the 115th minute of extra time to put the Eagles ahead for good.

The Minnesota Stars succumbed to the San Jose Earthquakes 1-0 with an 85th minute goal by Steven Lenhart. The Stars matched San Jose’s play most of the night but did look tired at times after a difficult stretch of games all played away from home.

The Harrisburg City Islanders took care of business at home against the visiting New York Red Bulls. Harrisburg defeated NY by a score of 3-1 in overtime.

USOC darlings Cal FC were able to hold off a full strength Seattle Sounders for one half but not for a second. The last standing amateur side, coached by Eric Wynalda, were easily handled with quality goals from Seattle with the final result a 5-0 drubbing.

Here are Tuesday evening’s results:

FOURTH-ROUND RESULTS – Tuesday, June 5

Harrisburg City Islanders (USL PRO) 3, New York Red Bulls (MLS) 1 (OT): Harrisburg defeated an MLS team for a second straight week, led by Sainey Touray’s two-goal performance on Tuesday at the Skyline Sports Complex in Harrisburg, Pa. Touray’s second tally came in the fourth minute of overtime, and teammate Lucky Mkosana added an insurance goal in the 117th minute. The City Islanders were coming off a thrilling come-from-behind victory against the New England Revolution in the third round. Since Harrisburg’s first U.S. Open Cup in 2007, the club has posted a 5-3 record against MLS teams.

Philadelphia Union (MLS) 2, D.C. United (MLS) 1 (OT): Antoine Hoppenot scored the game-winning goal in the fifth minute of overtime as the Union hung on for the win at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md. The first half included two stoppage-time goals, one by Philadelphia’s Brian Carroll and an equalizer by D.C.’s Josh Wolff to take a 1-1 score into halftime.

Dayton Dutch Lions (USL PRO) 2, Michigan Bucks (PDL) 1 (OT): Joel DeLass converted a penalty kick seven minutes into overtime during the Dutch Lions’ win against Michigan on Tuesday at the Oakland University Soccer Field in Rochester, Mich. Dayton’s Eli Garner netted the game’s first goal in the 12th minute and the Bucks’ Anthony Grant scored unassisted in the 55th minute.

Sporting Kansas City (MLS) 2, Colorado Rapids (MLS) 0: Teal Bunbury found the net 79th minute for host Sporting and Rapids goalkeeper Matt Pickens allowed an own goal in the 28th minute as Kansas City blanked its fellow MLS side on Tuesday at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan.

Charlotte Eagles (USL PRO) 2, San Antonio Scorpions (NASL) 1 (OT): Charlotte’s Mauricio Salles lifted his team in overtime with a 116th-minute penalty kick goal at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio, Texas. The Eagles’ Devon Grousis garnered a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute, but the Scorpions were able to tie the score in regulation with Pablo Campos goal in the 75th minute.

San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) 1, Minnesota Stars FC (NASL) 0: Steven Lenhart’s header goal in the 85th minute broke up what had been a scoreless affair through most of regulation as the Earthquakes defeated the Stars on Tuesday at Stanford University’s Cagan Stadium in Stanford, Calif.

Seattle Sounders FC (MLS) 5, Cal FC (USASA) 0: Osvaldo Alonso and Fredy Montero each posted two goals as the Sounders erupted with five goals in the second half at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, Wash. Andy Rose also chipped in with a goal for the three-time defending U.S. Open Cup champion Seattle.

Chivas USA (MLS) 2, Carolina RailHawks (NASL) 1: Juan Pablo Angel’s penalty kick in second-half stoppage time lifted Chivas to a victory against the RailHawks on Tuesday at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. Chivas got on the board first with Juan Agudelo’s 31st-minute goal. Carolina’s Mike Palacio found the equalizer in the 79th minute. In the final stages, RailHawks defender and 2010 U.S. Soccer Young Athlete of the Year Gale Agbossoumonde committed a handball in the closing stages and Angel converted the late PK for his first Open Cup goal.

fatigue may have played a part, but the Stars were simply not on their game last night. they were also outclassed most of the night, and the better team won. it was disappointing for it to end like this, but it was one heck of a run by the Minnesota Stars in US Open Cup action this year. it’ll be nice to use my tickets again for the next month and a half, since the schedule is pretty home-heavy. just in time for the humid heat and mosquitoes ;)

    come on you stars!!! :)

37.5% of the USL Pro teams made it this far? How cool is that for lower division soccer?

You folks may not have liked the talk, but these teams have walked the walk.

Bart, to me the surprise above all others (beside Cal FC – did Alexi Lalas really call them the best lower division team in the tournament? PLEASE!) is the Dayton Dutch Lions who were simply awful last year and looked pretty bad this year as well. They got a lucky draw to play the Bucks but Michigan puts out a decent team each year so kudos to them. I think it could get ugly quick in their next match at Chivas, however.

They gotta be really happy down there in Tamper, Florida.

Got give Big Papa, Holt and Eco their moment to shine. They got three clubs still alive and the NASL is eliminated, left to watching.

I can only imagine them slapping each others’ backs, making plans for a Martini lunch while they laugh at the fact that the NASL clubs have been eliminated? High fives all around, maybe a cocktail lunch.

They gotta be more than just a little bit giddy.

In the head to head, this year’s scoreboard reads (unless I botched it, like I usually botch things).

    USLPRO 1 – NASL 0

    @BQ-

Yeah, your language translated is nothing more than “luck”. That may be sour grapes from this website.

    @ Yankiboy

A cigar after a good steak dinner at Berns should be in order for the boys at USL inTampa.

Yeah, I would read it USL 1 – NASL goose eggs.

Yes, I know the upcoming rants…. so bite me!!

    PR Islanders are still alive.

@Bart, for Dayton, yes. For the rest of the teams, no. They totally deserve it. I know of others that know the USL PRO league well who are also surprised by Daytons spot in the quarterfinals. So I am no lone wolf. But you are of course fully aware of this. I mean come on! Last place in USL PRO with a 0 -5-4 record. Here, I will quote it for you. “The Dayton Dutch Lions have been lucky.”

With all that said I am rooting for them to take another upper level team down on the 26th.

I don’t know that they’d darken the door at Berns, given who owns it.

I guess we can put to rest the talk of D2 v USL Pro. I think with 3 teams in the final 8 USL Pro soccer must be equal or better than D2.

I wont put my name, to protect myself, but as a player who started against San Antonio last week for Charlotte, I can say they were a better team. I’m only a rookie just coming from the PDL, so I dont know much, but I can say from a players perspective, the NASL is a higher level.

Player for player they were better than us in all but a few spots, we just fought harder and they didn’t take their chances. They were also tired from a previous match where as we were fresh having the weekend before off, and transition is where we got them.

Just from this, and what I do know about some of my other friends playing in NASL, I think that if you scored the USL and NASL on how good the players are, crowd turn out, and venues, the NASL beats the USL.

On any day, any team can beat any team, so its not fair to judge them or us based on a knockout match.

And for the record: Dayton is going to get absolutely battered by SKC

@Anon, “And for the record: Dayton is going to get absolutely battered by SKC” Which is where you are from I see according to your IP.

    ^Those pesky IP’s.

Maybe Playah was taking an off day and travelled from to Dayton for some sightseeing or to visit with family and friends. He could have been scouting the Lions training sessions. Ya never know…
