US Women’s Blow Out Ghana in Opening Match of FIFA U-20 World Cup

2012 August 21

Minnesota’s Kassey Kallman bets Ghana’s Alice Danso to the ball. Kallman played all 90 minutes of Monday’s victory.

The United States U-20 Women’s National Team defeated Ghana 4-0 on Monday in their opening match of the FIFA U-20 World Cup being held in Japan.

Fleet footed forward Maya Hayes collected a hat trick with an assist going to Kealia Ohai on the first US goal and Samantha Mewis provided the other two set ups.

The first goal was a Ghana own goal created by an outstanding header from the US on a corner kick. The ball rattled the woodwork and deflected off Linda Addai to put the US up 1-0 and start them on their way. Highlights can be seen here through FIFA.com.

Germany defeated China, 4-0, in the second match of the evening meaning the Americans and Germans are tied atop Group D on points, goal difference and goals scored.

The USA will next face China PR at 5:50 a.m. ET on Thursday, Aug. 23. The match will be broadcast live on ESPNU and ESPN3. Fans can also follow the match on ussoccer.com’s MatchTracker and on Twitter @ussoccer_ynt.

Yes, I’ve been thinking the exact same thing, Bart. I would dare say that the defenders on this team are going to be better then then current defenders on the USWNT who are good but not great. This batch has the potential to be very, very good.

She does scare me. She could kick both of our asses, Bart… at the same time… with one hand tied behind her back. Of course you’d probably like that, wouldn’t you?

Completely agree. Our future team is looking great. But so is Canada’s. The next Women’s world cup up there will really be something.
