Show Your Support for Professional Soccer in Minnesota Tonight at the Stars FC Match

2012 September 1
by Brian Quarstad

If you’re going to the Minnesota Stars FC match tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Blaine, Minn., make sure you seek out a member of the Dark Clouds supporters group and ask them where you can sign a letter that will soon be sent to the NASL office. That letter asks the NASL team owners and league officials to fund the Stars for another season while the search for permanent local ownership continues.

As you most likely know by now, the future of the team is not at all certain. With the Cosmos coming in as a new expansion team and the league office saying there will be more teams announced for 2013 and 2014, the league-owned Stars are sitting on shaky ground for the new season. It’s understandable that the league owners have concerns about indefinitely financially supporting a team. The ultimate solution would be to find an owner. But until that happens there is always the possibility of the team being contracted which was talked about by Commissioner David Downs in this article and could happen as early as late October this year.

The Dark Clouds and MLS4MN are hoping that the signatures will show the league and its owners that supporters of pro soccer in Minnesota have a sincere desire to keep professional soccer alive in the state for a 24th consecutive season in 2013. Add your signature and support pro soccer in Minnesota.

If I want to sign this but am not in Minnesota, how can I help?

I’m a firm supporter of the idea of a strong soccer pyramid at all levels, and as a Macalester alum Minnesotan soccer has a particular place in my heart (right below my own home NASL team, of course).

Have the Dark Clouds reached out to supporter groups for other NASL teams? Not being an actual member myself I can’t say for certain, but I’d be willing to bet the other fans around the league would be happy to try and gather signatures for the cause as well. I’d even suggest reaching out to the Borrough Boys in NY. I’m sure they wouldn’t want to see the Cosmos coming into the league be the reason why pro soccer in MN doesn’t see a 24th straight season for the fans there. Wishing all the best to my fellow fans in MN!

The Wilf’s 1% er, sorry had to go there, used soccer to gain a stadium. There by gaining millions in added revenues w/ a promise or smoke screen on MLS team @ the expense of a grassroots soccer. As a fan in NYC I have always viewed MN soccer as having serious grassroots element.

I would gladly sign an online petition in support of the stars but lets not begin by blaming the Cosmos for their demise.

point your finger at WILF, because of him , what sound business man would invest in D2 with this MLS possibility looming?

What I hope Mn soccer fans will tout, is that a soccer team potentially draw 5-7000/game can be a successful investment.
