Puerto Rico Islanders Settle for Draw with LA Galaxy in CONCACAF Champions League Play

by Brian Quarstad

The Puerto Rico Islanders played a solid match against the Los Angeles Galaxy in CONCACAF Champions League play on Wednesday night in Bayamon at the newly renovated Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium. Despite outshooting the Galaxy 16-9 and forcing 5 solid saves from LA goalkeeper Brian Perk, the Islanders could not find a goal and the match ended in a 0-0 tie.

Despite the positive result for Puerto Rico, walking away from the match with a tie against a very good but very young Galaxy squad did not help their cause on this year’s CONCACAF campaign. After 3 games played, the Islanders sit bottom of Group 5 with only one point and a -6 goal differential.

The Islanders will next play Metapan on Thursday, September 27th at home for their final match in the group. Metapan sit 2nd in the group with 3 points and a -1 goal differential, having only played 2 matches so far. The final match for Metapan isn’t until October 25th when they host the Galaxy who sit top of the group with 7 points and a +7 goal differential thanks in part to the previous 4-0 defeat of the Islanders in LA.

It would have been nice to have won but at least Islanders looked better last night. When Hansen and Pito entered the match, Orange Troop looked more attack minded. Nice to see Whit have enough confidence and forsight to utilize the teenager, Jackie Marrero off the bench in this sort of match.
