The Curious Case of Harry Maguire

Transfer rumours play a big role in the summer months between domestic seasons in Europe, and there’s simply no way of getting around that. Some people love the excitement of not knowing who is going to go where, whereas others would much rather focus on what’s happening on the pitch instead. We find ourselves somewhere in the middle, because while some of the rumours can be utterly ridiculous, there are a few that make us chuckle – or that we generally enjoy.

One man who has been at the heart of the rumour mill in recent months is the one and only Harry Maguire.

An impressive player

The young defender is perhaps best known within English football for his string of strong performances for the national team during the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He was one of the driving forces behind the Three Lions making it all the way through to the semi finals, and for the rest of his career, he can look back on that summer and feel incredibly proud of what he was able to accomplish.

In the immediate aftermath of the tournament it seemed like he was getting a lot of interest from some big clubs around the European game, but as the 2018/19 season drew closer, that seemed to fizzle out just a little bit. Now, we find ourselves in a situation where he’s a wanted man all over again – as reported by the likes of the Leicester Mercury and Sky Sports.

In the eyes of many Maguire is considered to be one of the most intriguing defenders in English football today, but even with that being the case, some fans and media members are struggling to wrap their heads around the price tag that is being thrown around in connection to his name.

How much?

The price tag in question is £80 million, and the team that is arguably best known for wanting his services is Manchester United. We’ve all seen and heard the mockery that has been thrown in the direction of the Red Devils in the immediate aftermath of their poor 2018/19 campaign, and now, that trend seems to be continuing into the summer transfer window.

A lot of folks can’t seem to understand or fathom why anyone would want to pay that kind of money for someone like Maguire, even though there are two factors that they’re seemingly choosing to ignore. Number one: he’s an incredibly good defender, and number two: inflation in football has been on the rise for longer than we care to remember. This is just part of the game now and how it works, and the sooner people come to terms with that, the better.

We aren’t suggesting that we agree or disagree with the move, because to be perfectly honest, we have absolutely no idea one way or another. We just want to sit back and see how it all plays out.

At the very least, this kind of saga should do wonders for his confidence once next season rolls around.
