Growing The FIFA Club World Cup

The Liverpool Echo is reporting that there is controversy surrounding the next FIFA Club World Cup. Football.London is reporting that there are some inconsistencies surrounding the next FIFA Club World Cup. We could go on, but we don’t want to bore you with the details.

These reports are coming out in the days prior to the UEFA Champions League final, which yes, means we still don’t even know who is going to be performing in the Club World Cup: Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur. That little anecdote doesn’t seem to matter all too much to the masses, because they’d much rather talk about and discuss the financial side of things.

An air of confusion

We should all know by now what the Club World Cup is about, and when we say ‘what it’s about’ we mean it’s an utter sham. It supposedly makes up some of the best clubs in world football, who have been pulled from different continents and regions after winning a tournament or two in order to get that far. In reality, though, there aren’t enough teams involved, it isn’t a fair showcase or representation of the world’s best, and it just feels a little bit ‘lacking’ when you compare to the actual FIFA World Cup.

Even in that sense the proper World Cup itself has been facing some major controversies as of late, and when you total all of that up, it certainly seems like there is a running theme here: FIFA. As an organisation they just can’t seem to pull themselves together and create a strong and consistent environment for teams, players and coaches to work in. Instead, we are subjected to events that could have a lot of potential, but let themselves down in the long run. It’s a fairly exhausting exercise to go through over and over again, but alas, this is where we’ve wound up.

The positioning of the CWC on a year to year basis is pretty awkward too, and whilst there’s not much that can be done about that, it’s still a bit of an irritation.

Do you understand it?

In terms of what could be done, we wouldn’t be surprised to see it get canned at some point in the next few years. It isn’t the most beneficial of competitions in the first place, and it’s just kind of ‘there’. It may as well be a friendly tournament at this point, because the bigger clubs tend to treat it as such. We all know that Europe is pretty much the dominant continent in world football anyway, especially in the landscape of club football, so what’s the point in pretending like that isn’t the case?

That may just be arrogance on our part, but if FIFA has some alternative ideas regarding what we can do to make things interesting again, then we’re all ears.

As it is we just think that the focus should remain on the Champions League final itself, because we all know that to be the real showcase event.
